Ulster's X-files: Dossier of UFO sightings Released
UFO Published: Thursday 2, August 2007 - 07:58

By Sam Lister

A secret 'X-files' style dossier of UFO sightings in Northern Ireland has been made public for the first time.

Details revealed under the Freedom of Information Act show that 11 sightings have been reported in the area in the past decade.

They range from bright lights to dome-shaped objects, according to the Ministry of Defence log books that list times, dates, places and descriptions. The busiest year for possible 'space invader' activity in the province was 1999, with five incidents recorded, including two in Co Antrim within 48 hours.

Other reports include 18 lights moving across the sky and an object the size of a bowling ball with red lines on it that "moved fast, then vanished" .

Describing one incident, a witness told the MoD they saw "two egg shaped objects, with red, blue and green coloured lights", adding it was dome shaped at the top but was flat at the bottom.

Every year in the UK, more than 100 UFO sightings are reported to the MoD.

Although the Ministry does not have any expertise in respect of UFOs, it is required to investigate every sighting in order to establish whether or not the UK's airspace has been infringed upon.

An MoD spokesman said: "The MoD examines reports solely to establish whether UK airspace may have been compromised by hostile or unauthorised military activity.

"If required, sighting reports are examined with the assistance of the department's air defence experts.

"Unless there is evidence of a potential threat, there is no attempt to identify the nature of each sighting reported."

However, correspondence between the MoD and members of the public reveals that Whitehall officials remain "totally open- minded" about the existence of UFOs.

Giving details of the MoD's policy on UFOs, the Director of Air Staff said in a lengthy response to a Freedom of Information request: "The Ministry of Defence does not have any expertise or role in respect of 'UFO (or) flying saucer' matters or to the question of the existence or otherwise of extraterrestrial life forms, about which it remains totally open-minded.

"To date the MoD knows of no evidence which substantiates the existence of these alleged phenomena.

"The MoD examines any 'UFO' reports it receives solely to establish whether what was seen might have some defence significance; namely, whether there is any evidence that the United Kingdom's airspace might have been compromised by hostile or unauthorised air activity.

"Unless there is evidence of a potential threat to the United Kingdom from an external source, and to date no 'UFO' report has revealed such evidence, we do not attempt to identify the precise nature of each sighting reported to us."

He added: "We believe that rational explanations, such as aircraft lights or natural phenomena, could be found for them if resources were diverted for this purpose, but it is not the function of the MoD to provide this kind of aerial identification service.

"It would be an inappropriate use of defence resources if we were to do so."

Details of the UFO sightings by members of the public were released in response to a series of requests made under the Freedom of Information Act, the MoD confirmed.

Alien Comic Relief
Howdy All,

I just had to share my newest comic! I drew this one this morning.

This is the September cartoon strip for UFO Magazine.

And for the few of you that aren't up on the comic, the aliens are hooked on government cheese and they're trying to find out how to get it without going through the government agents (who make them do stupid tricks for cheese).

Enjoy the insanity! Bonnie

We Are a UFO Hotspot
UFO MATT CHORLEY LONDON EDITOR

06:00 - 02 August 2007

The Westcountry is a "hot spot" for sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects, according to a secret Ministry of Defence (MoD) database. In the last eight years there have been almost 80 unexplained sightings in the skies over the far South West, ranging from 300 ft white spheres in Tavistock to spinning orange lights over Glastonbury. The WMN has also learnt that since 2000, the MoD has stopped investigating reports of unidentified flying objects and the list of sightings has only come to light following a Freedom of Information request.

It means the list of UFOs, just released from the MoD archives, has never been properly investigated by defence experts. But before the recent shark-inspired panic switches to fears of an alien invasion, it would appear some of the accounts from space-ship spotters can be more easily explained. For example, some of the UFOs listed in the official Government database have so far taken the shape of a telegraph pole, fireworks or helicopters.

In the past, the MoD examined any UFO sighting reports that it received to establish if the UK airspace has been "compromised by hostile and unauthorised activity" as part of the top secret report into Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK Air Defence Region.

"It was not to establish the possibility of extra-terrestrial visitors but to see if there was any information of value to assess the threat of foreign weapons systems," an MoD spokesman said yesterday.

But since 2000 all this has changed: "Defence intelligence staff decided that it was not necessary for them to continue receiving the sighting reports generated by the public and would put the resources into other tasks. The MoD doesn't have the expertise or a role in respect of it and doesn't know of any evidence of the alleged phenomena." The reports range from a traditional "flying saucer" in Bideford in July 2000 to the more extreme object, the size of a small room "spinning on its own axis", in Torquay in 2001.

The UFOs come in all shapes and sizes too, from a very bright "half-a-mile-long object" over Probus in Cornwall in 2001, to a "silver, cigar-shaped object, moving faster than a nearby plane" in Harracott, Devon in December 2000. While some of the reports are incredibly vague, others are detailed in their descriptions. On April 7, 2003 a "craft" was spotted in Falmouth with three yellow lights on the port side and three red lights on starboard side. Its shape was "between circular and triangular, or delta wing size" - although the timing of the sighting, at 2.30am, might suggest the spotter was not as alert as they might have been.

Dave Gillham, who founded Cornwall UFO Research Group in 1995, said less light pollution made it easier for people in the Westcountry to see the airborne objects.

"There are only small towns, so once you get out into the country you can see more clearly," he said. "The UFOs are really coloured lights, so they stick out quite a bit in the dark. They come in from the sea and go around the coast. There's a lot going on at the moment. I don't think everything can be explained."

Mr Gillham holds annual conferences in the county with speakers from all over the world to discuss the phenomena. But he admits it is also a chance for people who have seen something unusual overhead to talk with other like-minded people. "A lot of people get ridiculed for saying they have seen UFOs, so that's why we have the conference."

Where are all the UFOs?

UFOs: The First Encounters

Alien Abductions

They're out there... in Bonnybridge, Scotland
UFO ALICE WYLLIE

IT WAS 60 years ago this month that a mysterious aircraft crash outside the small town of Roswell in New Mexico set conspiracy theorists' tongues wagging. It's fair to say that they haven't stopped since.

In July 1947, materials were recovered from Roswell by the US military that, to this day, the US government insist were the remains of a top-secret research balloon. However, UFO enthusiasts are convinced that what was recovered was in fact an alien spacecraft, and that the government tried to cover up the incident.

Roswell has since become synonymous with all things UFO-related, and is a cult tourist destination, with thousands fans descending upon the town this month for the anniversary celebrations.

That Roswell might have anything at all in common with Bonnybridge, a small town in Scotland's central belt, seems unlikely. However, while the former is famous for its otherworldly visitors, Bonnybridge can boast of being the world's No1 hotspot for UFO sightings.

Part of the "Falkirk Triangle", whose other two points are formed by Stirling and Fife, Bonnybridge averages 300 sightings a year and more than one in three residents claims to have seen something unexpected in the night skies there. Local believer Craig Malcolm, 37, says he has seen around 180 UFOs over the past 15 years, and has 18 hours of video footage that he believes proves there is something going on in the skies above the Falkirk area.

"I first saw a UFO in 1991, right above my house. It was a disc-shaped object hovering silently and it hung around for a good five minutes," he says. "Since then I've seen triangles, tubes, spheres, cigar-shaped objects, lights and colours. A couple of years ago I was in the car with my dad and we both saw a cigar-shaped object hovering nearby. Suddenly, two balls of light came from it and moved towards us. I just thought, 'I'm out of here!'"

Malcolm says he has sent his images and footage to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute in the US to be analysed and that they confirmed that about 90 per cent of the objects he had captured on camera were UFOs. "I was a bit sceptical before I saw all this, but now I believe there's something going on."

He's not the only one convinced: UFO enthusiasts from across the globe continue to flock to the Bonnybridge area, desperate for a close encounter of their own.

Thinking that a first-hand account of my own abduction by aliens would be the scoop of the year, I bravely headed in the direction of the Falkirk Triangle to take up position in an optimum touchdown spot.

Quiet and a little dour, Bonnybridge could really be any faded small town in Scotland, with little shops lining the high street, and a hinterland of sprawling housing estates. There's nothing to suggest that this place is in any way out of the ordinary... until I meet local councillor Billy Buchanan.

After the first reported sighting in 1992, when a businessman saw a sparkling, star-shaped object hovering above the road, Buchanan called a public meeting to discuss strange goings-on in the night sky. Since then, he has become an enthusiastic and well-known spokesperson for the issue, with some residents suggesting that he is exaggerating the incidents to gain publicity for the town. For nearly ten years Buchanan has tried to twin Bonnybridge with Roswell, making contact with Roswell's mayor, although Buchanan is, as yet, no further forward with the suggested partnership.

While Roswell has built an industry on alien-branded tourist tat, the residents of Bonnybridge don't seem quite so willing to embrace and cash in on their home town's unearthly reputation.

"I've been approached by merchandisers on countless occasions, trying to sell T-shirts and stuff like that, but every time I tell them no. I don't want all of this to be exploited," says Buchanan.

So what about the fact that there have been separate proposals from Dutch and American companies for a multi-million pound UFO theme park in the Bonnybridge area?

"I think that would be fantastic, and I'm still hoping it might go ahead," Buchanan says. Claiming to have spotted UFOs on a number of occasions, he has relentlessly campaigned for a formal investigation into the unexplained happenings at Bonnybridge, approaching both John Major and Tony Blair to demand an investigation. He has logged every sighting and compiled every UFO photo ever taken. (Incidentally, he informs me, he also owns the world's largest collection of locks of hair.)

But has he ever seen an alien lifeform?

"I've seen loads of stuff, and I've got the photos and [video] footage to prove it. I've been ridiculed for it, my family's been ridiculed, but the evidence is there."

Keen to get started, we head to the best spot for saucer-spotting in Bonnybridge, a place believers call "the landing strip". Standing on this elevated area of barren land overlooking the town, Buchanan points towards Grangemouth, where he claims he once saw a blue cylinder moving through the sky from this very spot.

Maybe it was only because of the grey clouds in the sky, but the closest we can see to a UFO is a leaf being buffeted over our heads by the blustery winds.

However, Buchanan reassures me that not only is there definitely something extraterrestrial going on around Bonnybridge, but that there are also people who don't want us to know about it.

"My phone has been tapped in the past," he says calmly. "I don't know who is trying to listen to me, but I do know that the government isn't telling us everything. They couldn't remain completely silent on the subject, though, so a while ago they released a statement saying, 'There is nothing happening in Bonnybridge that is a threat to national security.' Now what does that tell you? That there's something going on, but the government is not prepared to tell us."

Exactly what he thinks might be "going on" is unclear, but evidence for UFOs is slowly mounting. One day in 1994, three cleaners on their way to work said they saw five UFOs, and when they got to work they found that some of their colleagues had also seen flashing lights and orange orbs glowing in the sky that same morning. In 2004, a number of locals claimed that a cigar-shaped flying craft had landed on a nearby golf course, and other reported sightings range from star-shaped objects to balls of light. Nick Pope, who ran the government's UFO project at the Ministry of Defence between 1991 and 1994, when the Bonnybridge sightings began, believes there is some substance to these claims.

"During my time at the MoD we did receive reports about sightings in the Bonnybridge area. I was sceptical at first, and of course the vast majority could quickly be discounted as weather balloons, satellites, that sort of thing, but there were a small number of credible cases, where witnesses were police officers or pilots for example, or where movement was captured on radar," he says. But of all the fascinating places on the planet that alien visitors might choose to explore, why Bonnybridge?

"When people ask me that, I ask them, 'Why Bethlehem?'" says Buchanan. It's not the most logical counter-argument, but I let it go. "UFOs tend to be drawn to more remote areas, and areas that have air bases, and there's plenty of those in Scotland. There's no explanation, but Bonnybridge is a very historical place. Some people believe that the real Stone of Destiny is buried here, and it's been suggested that aliens are guarding it. That's just one of the many theories."

Ron Halliday, the Stirling university-based author of UFO Scotland: Beyond the Falkirk Triangle, has his own theory, which is just as bizarre. "I believe Bonnybridge is some kind of window into another dimension, into the future or another world. That would explain the fact that many people have seen things very briefly that have then disappeared inexplicably," he says.

For every believer, there are plenty more sceptics. Dr David Clarke, a British UFO sceptic and author of Phantoms of the Sky, UFOs: A Modern Myth? and The UFOs that Never Were, says: "What tends to happen is that after an initial 'sighting' people want to believe that what they are seeing is something more interesting than a plane or a cloud, but more often than not that's exactly what they are seeing. Aircraft, clouds, balloons, lanterns, that's what people tend to be spotting. They're just responding to a craze."

Another rather catty theory, offered by the astronomer Patrick Moore, is that the sightings in probably occur more often when residents are staggering out of the local pubs. Well, as cynical as it sounds, it would certainly explain periods of "missing" time that cannot be accounted for, seeing stars or lights, and waking up with a mysterious headache in the morning...

Unknown Object in Photograph Taken in Gulf of Mexico
I was with my friend, Danny D'Addario, on his sailboat that afternoon using my Kodak EasyShare CD33 KODAK RETINAR Aspheric all glass lens 34mm-102mm (Equiv) AF 3x Optical, digital camera.

I didn't notice anything until I downloaded the pictures for viewing on my laptop. The mast is anodized non-reflective aluminum.

Imagine my surprize, at whatever that is near the mast. We were in South Gulf Cove channel to Gulf of Mexico about 4 miles north of Boca Grande, Florida.

Picture Poses Question: Are We Alone?
UFO Reported by Nick Kenney

July 28, 2007 06:14 PM CDT

Take a look at the picture and let us know what you see. The ring at the top center has a lot of people asking the question: What is it?

While staring into the dusk sky a small group in one neighborhood couldn't quite grasp what they were looking at.

So, one Millington woman grabbed her camera. The pictures still don't quite clarify what's hovering overhead.

Jan Yarbro saw that unexplained figure in the sky Wednesday night just after 8:00.

She grabbed her camera and snapped a series of photos. But is that car-sized, translucent, black outline out-of-this world?

"Looked up in the sky, saw the thick black circle," said Yarbro. "It stayed stationary, no lights or anything like that. Stayed there for 20, 30 minutes and then it just started disappearing," she added.

It's a picture that's leaving neighbors not necessarily sold on the paranormal, but definitely open-minded.

"Stuff's been getting in that garden back there, but we figured it was coons. Now it might be something different," said Yarbro. "I'm sure there's an explanation that's simple, but it's just interesting," she added.

Neighbors are just looking for some logic in a close encounter. Yarbro says her pictures were not doctored.

Those on Lucy Road say they've never seen that bubble before or in the few days since.

MoD Reveals 29 UFO Sightings
UFO 08:00 - 03 August 2007

There have been 29 sightings of unidentified flying objects in Lincolnshire over the last decade, the Government has revealed. UFO sightings in the county have been a talking point amongst professionals and experts for years. And some members of the public in Lincoln are convinced they have seen strange aerial goings-on themselves.

"It was like nothing I had seen before, it was cornet-shaped with bright orange lights, so there was no chance of it being an aircraft" said Beth Clarkson (59) from Skellingthorpe, near Lincoln.

"The triangular-shaped object was hovering over the roofs of our houses.

"After contacting our local RAF airbase at Scampton, they denied any sort of activity, but there was definitely something unique about this."

Officially, the Ministry of Defence's policy is to examine reports solely to establish whether UK airspace may have been compromised by hostile or unauthorised military activity. Unless there is evidence of a potential threat, there is no attempt to identify the nature of each sighting reported.

The ministry's director of air staff Air Commodore Dick Garwood said: "We believe that rational explanations, such as aircraft lights or natural phenomena, could be found for them if resources were diverted for this purpose, but it is not the function of the MoD to provide this kind of aerial identification service.

"It would be an inappropriate use of defence resources if we were to do so."

Schoolboy Ben Hueso is convinced that strange lights in the night sky could be proof of extra-terrestrial life.

Ben (14) claims he saw two UFOs in the sky above his garden in Branston, near Lincoln, on two consecutive evenings.

"The MoD and the rest of the Government are conspiring against us and have a lot more knowledge than they wish to let on," he said.

"These cases prove that some other form of life exists. When it happened to me I was terrified. The phone cut out and something definitely paranormal was happening."

Veteran Pilot Sees Domed Saucer
Depiction
January 1, 1978 - Veteran Pilot Sees Domed Saucer With Windows At Close Range

A dome-shaped UFO with portholes was seen in broad daylight by veteran pilot Floyd P. Hallstrom of Oxnard, California. Hallstrom had been flying for 37 years, 1712 as a Navy combat air crewman and personal crew chief to admirals, including the Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet.

Hallstrom had left Oxnard at about 12:35 p.m. in a Cessna 170A bound to San Diego via Los Angeles, following a friend, Jim Victor, who was delivering another plane to a customer at Brown Field, San Diego. The plan was for him to transport Victor back to Oxnard after the delivery. The two kept in touch by radio.

As Hallstrom approached Santa Monica at 7,500 feet altitude, the sky was clear except for a smog layer in the vicinity of Los Angeles International Airport.

"At this time I was looking for Jim straight ahead," Hallstrom reported, "when I spotted [the UFO] just on the edge of the haze area above LAX [Los Angeles International Airport] slightly to the east side....I thought it was Jim so I watched it for about a minute because he had just given me his position report, but it seemed to get larger and coming toward me so I naturally realized that it wasn't Jim.... I started looking to see what it was but I could see no wings on this aircraft although at this time I could see windows which appeared to be passenger windows in the aircraft. As it drew nearer though, I was able to determine that there were no wings or horizontal empennage assembly to the aircraft as a conventional aircraft...."

Hallstrom began wondering if it was some kind of helicopter, but it was approaching at high speed. As the UFO passed about 6,000 feet to his left, he was looking down on it an angle of about 30-45 degrees. Then the true form suddenly became clear to him. There were no rotors, no tail assembly.

"All of a sudden I was able to make out the complete form of a saucer shape or round object...I could see the dome, also very vividly clear, including all the windows.... [I] observed it to be of a very bright metal...it was more of a nickel or highly polished chrome or stainless steel type of metal than aluminum because it had more of a mellow glow than [if] it was of the type finish on a high finish aluminum."

About 16 to 20 evenly spaced windows were visible around the circumference of the dome, located just above the base. The dome appeared to be a perfect hemisphere about 20 feet in diameter resting on the base which was about 30 feet in diameter. The UFO continued on a course of about 310 degrees (opposite to Hallstrom's course) with no sign of rotation, oscillation, pitch, roll, or yaw. Neither was there any sign of a propulsion system. The sun reflected off the dome as a bright spot as the UFO passed. After about a minute the object disappeared from view behind the Cessna. Hallstrom estimated its speed at about 650 m.p.h. He quickly took notes and made a sketch of the UFO.

Reaching for his radio microphone, he first called Jim Victor to report what he had seen. Then he notified various FAA authorities.

Hallstrom, who was shaken by the sighting, later had troubling dreams, mostly about UFOs and aliens. He had not taken the subject seriously up to this time, but the implications of what he had seen struck home to him. He later reported that the experience had altered his entire life.

Idaho-Object Makes U-shape Curve
07-13-I was taking a nightly walk throughout the town of Moscow, ID listening to music on my mp3 player and as I was coming up the street to my apartment I looked up to the east (bearing of 50 degrees, approx 35 degrees elevation) and saw what I thought at first to be a bright star, however there were no stars (or planets) that were that bright in that sector of the sky.

The light then got brighter for a moment and then started moving in a U type curve higher into the sky and began to get dimmer. Shortly thereafter I lost track of the object. Shortly thereafter I sprinted to my apartment to grab my camera, but by the time I got back outside I could not find the object again after about 30 minutes of searching the sky. The sky is also hazy in this area at this time of year due to dust which did not help in tracking the object. source: www.mufon.com

Indiana-Strobing Lights
07-20-My son noticed unusual lights in sky due east of my location. We observed them for app. 3 minutes total time. White lights, chevron shape, NO SOLID object seen... appeared to be rather distant. App. 10-15 degrees above horizon, (general direction of Wright Patterson AFB from here) flares ??? Lights appeared to be on and off at short durations. Not consistant flashes like strobes.

Definitely unlike the many aircraft I've seen going to and from CVG airport which is about 30 miles from here. I have never reported anything before, but this was definitely out of the ordinary. I'm just saying that what I saw was very unusual, not extra-terrestrial. I sent my son for a video camera... have not yet reviewed tape... will forward copy if anything is visible. source: www.mufon.com

Kentucky-Small Sphere
07-06-At about 4 PM my wife and I were traveling south east bound on I-24 between exit 89 in KY and exit 1 in TN observed a small black sphere the size of a basketball between 50-100 feet above the ground and only 100 feet to the right side of the interstate. I am surprised I even saw the object as it was small and somewhat close to trees. The sphere had a small ring around the middle, but tilted about 45 degrees from the horizon. Only visible for about one minute as I could not slow down.

Continued to observe in side and rear window. It slowly gained altitude but I lost it because of trees, a small hill and then by it's distance away. Would not have reported it except I read the recent MD report and it appears to be identical to what I saw. I am a retired Army helicopter instructor pilot with 23 years of flying experience. This object was not a balloon, or a power line obstacle marker (those are orange) and just to make sure I went back to the exact spot and there are no power lines or houses, only heavy forested area. source: www.mufon.com

Minnesota-Green Light Streak
07-19-My friend Derek and I were driving out in the country because we were bored. Willie was in the back seat but he tells us he could not see anything. We had been driving for about an hour and were talking to each other. The streak appeared shortly after we had turned around to head back.

It came from behind the car and moved very quickly. We were going about 60. It was pretty high up and far away I think. It was green. It disappeared after about two seconds. I couldn't make out the shape but I could tell it was moving pretty fast. When I saw it my mouth hung open and I was kinda in awe.

I felt like the moment had slowed down a bit. There was a silence between me and Derek for a few seconds. After that it was all we could talk about till we got home. Willie didn't see anything he says. source: www.mufon.com

New York-Black Sphere
07-15-Watchig the sky with binocculars (as I do often now since my first sighting ) about 35 min. later I see a black ball / sphere with a plasma like light emitting from it . At times it would get intense, then dim, at times would go out to black, but still visible.

This lasted about ten to twelve min. until house blocked my view. I stared at this "object" until my arms were fatigued and tears streamed down my cheek from holding the binocculars! I tried not to blink or make a move, so i would'nt lose it. source: www.mufon.com

North Carolina-Object Low in Sky
07-12-I first noticed this object while running errands with my husband. It glowed and did not really seem to fit - as it was very noticeable and hung low in the sky. I kept an eye on it as we traveled home. It did not move, did not grow dimmer or brighter. At first I thought it was a planet/star. However, when we arrived home, it had not moved downward towards the horizon. Around 10 p.m., I was speaking to a friend on the phone, on the front porch, facing west. I looked for the object and it was moving northeast. It was pulsating, moving slowly at a rather low altitude. It came by the house and I lost sight of it at that time.

It resembled two other objects I had seen a month or so ago. There were two of them, one in the southeast and the other in the west. They were round, glowed an orange color and moved slowly. My attention was drawn to them due to the "firefly lights". There were about five or six objects, I could not see the shape, that were flying from the north towards the object. They resembled fire flies, flashing a brilliant white light and moving rapidly. They seemed to converge on the object. The object then began "floating" towards the west. I followed as it moved and ran through the house to the front - facing west. At that time, I spotted a second orange glowing object some distance from the first, "floating" west. Once again I noticed the "firefly" lights that seemed to be following it. I watched until they disappeared. source: www.mufon.com
