New ABC Primetime Special, "UFOs: Seeing is Believing"
ABC News' David Muir examines the evidence behind UFO sightings in a new
For decades, millions of people around the world have reported seeing UFOs hovering in their skies. It is a mystery that science has been unable to solve, and the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Much of the reporting on this subject holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.

(ABC News)"UFOs: Seeing is Believing" takes a serious look at the phenomenon in today's world. The 90-minute special includes interviews with scientists searching for proof of life beyond earth and UFO witnesses who claim aliens are already here. Building on the original Peter Jennings report in 2005, David Muir reports on new sightings, as well as NASA's current search for life on Mars.

"UFOs: Seeing is Believing," to be broadcast in HDTV, airs on a special edition of "Primetime" Tuesday, September 16 from 9:30 - 11:00 p.m. ET.

The program follows the entire scope of the UFO experience, from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. Muir reports on a recent UFO sighting in Stephenville, Texas, where multiple witnesses reported seeing enormous lights moving in strange configurations on the evening of January 8, 2008. He interviews some of the most credible witnesses of the sighting and a radar expert who evaluated their claims and found something surprising in the data. Sophisticated animations approved by the eyewitnesses allow viewers to get a feel for the experience first hand.

The special draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. While professional skeptics about UFOs speak out, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms elsewhere in the universe. The special also examines the most recent advances in the search for life on other planets. This past summer, NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander, a robot that tests and analyzes soil on the planet, found conclusive evidence of water ice on Mars. You'll hear from scientists on the project about the real possibility of finding life on Earth's next-door neighbor.

ABC News explores the facts behind the mystery of the incident at Roswell, New Mexico, where, in 1947, the story goes, the U.S. Government collected the wreckage from a crashed flying saucer. And you'll hear from the people who claim they've been abducted by aliens.

    Among the UFO cases presented:

Minot Air Force Base, October 1968 -- Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.

Phoenix, Ariz., March 1997 -- Thousands witness what many believe was a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.

St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 -- Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude. Today, if you report a UFO to the U.S. government, you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation which ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest.

But leading theoretical physicist Michio Kaku told ABC, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by an advanced civilization because … on the off chance that there is something there, that could literally change the course of human history."

'Galactic Internet' Could Broadcast Alien Signals
    UFO-Depiction
If we received a message from an extraterrestrial civilization, would we necessarily realize it? SETI has long scanned the skies for evidence of alien transmissions, while others have proposed a hunt for physical artifacts sent by our distant neighbors. But neutrino physicists at the University of Hawaii have proposed yet another possibility: that humans have already received an extraterrestrial communication, and that we might find the message in our existing observations of the stars.

Professor John Learned suggested that a civilization could attempt to initiate communication with other advanced civilizations by making unnatural alterations to Cepheids, relatively rare stars that other civilizations are likely to study:

Cepheids dim and brighten regularly, in a pattern that depends on their brightness. This lets astronomers measure the distance to the stars, helping to resolve mysteries such as the Universe's age and how fast it is expanding. As such, any sufficiently advanced civilization would want to monitor such stars, the scientists reasoned.

To send messages using a Cepheid, Learned and his colleagues suggest that extraterrestrials might change the star's cycle. A Cepheid becomes dimmer as ionized helium builds up in its atmosphere. Eventually, the atmosphere expands and deionizes, restarting the cycle.

Firing a high-energy neutrino beam into a Cepheid could heat its core and brighten the star early - "just as an electric pulse to the heart can make it skip a beat," Learned says.

Thus, the Cepheids might provide an intergalactic network of relays, which distant societies could use to broadcast messages to one another. But don't go warming up those neutrinos yet:

The galactic internet would be slow - a Cepheid with a roughly one-day period could transmit about 180 bits per year. Such a transmission would require roughly a millionth of the star's energy, the researchers estimate.

For the time being, it makes more sense to comb through the 100 years' worth of data researchers have collected on the Cephids, searching for irregularities in the pulsing power. Learned estimates:

"Analyzing that data would take a graduate student a couple of months, and just think if it turned out to be correct."

At least the university's indentured academics know how they'll be spending their school year.

UFO crash lands at Lee White Museum

    Updated: 09/09/2008 04:22 PM

    By: Web Staff

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Oswego is all abuzz about an invasion of UFOs at the Lee White Marine Museum. The museum held a mock UFO crash landing to mark several extra-terrestrial events taking place at the museum, as well as SUNY Oswego, in the coming weeks.

There will be a museum talk this Saturday with astronomer Dr. Scott Roby. Next month, Squonk opera's "Astro-Rama" will perform a free show at SUNY Oswego.

As for the object that landed in Oswego, museum officials say they are still investigating where it came from.

"We're told by our friends that no one was hurt. No being was hurt in this crash, so we are grateful. But we're thinking that aliens, like the early explorers, maybe they were coming to look and see what we're about," said museum Executive Director Mercedes Niess.

“Astro-Rama” will perform October 2nd through the 5th.

Why Would Aliens Visit Stratford, Connecticut?
Orbs off the beach in Stratford
    Monday, September 8, 2008 3:15 AM EDT

By Abram Katz, Register Science Editor

Confused by the lights: UFO sightings plentiful, but why would aliens visit Stratford?

The aliens traveled from a distant galaxy recently to spend a few hours watching the Connecticut shoreline from a set of three silent orbs.

So believe a few who say they observed and photographed the airborne shapes. Something about the Nutmeg State appears to be a cosmic draw.

Loretta Parisi of Meriden saw five dots in formation leaving clouds of smoke. "This is one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen," she said.

Others saw planes skywriting a promotion for a casino. That could clear up one mystery, perhaps.

Parisi said she never saw airplanes. Just lines of smoke.

Did anyone get a clear photo of extraterrestrial aerospace design? No.

A review of UFO reports past reveals many blobs of light, featureless dots and other photos that show funny looking clouds. The clouds are usually in focus, but the blobs and dots rarely are.

They also are photographed and videotaped, for the most part, with hand-held cameras, since their schedules are erratic. You just never know when an intelligent object from light-years away will arrive to check out Milford waterfront property, or leave trails of smoke, or hover around Earth for some inexplicable reason.

Hence, there are hundreds of unfocused, shaky images of undefined blobs posted all over the Internet — hardly convincing evidence of visitors from outer space.

"This kind of stuff doesn’t impress me in the least. You can create your own photos with layer upon layer and you can make anything look real," said James Fulmer, earth scientist and astronomer at Southern Connecticut State University.

Recently, an Orange resident wrote of seeing odd orbs of lights off beaches in Milford and Stratford and that, to be "honest, (he’s) not sure what any of us saw, but we know it wasn’t normal."

Many UFO sightings come from a planet, but not from another planet.

Venus, always one of the brightest objects in the sky, is often mistaken for a "mother ship."

Many of these reports are result of a physiological phenomenon called autokinesis, which does not involve bending spoons or flying. Autokinesis occurs on dark nights when few objects are visible to provide comparisons.

A fixed light watched for a prolonged period can appear to move. It’s an illusion, but explains many UFO reports.

Look at the red blinking light atop an antenna tower, and after a while it will start to travel. A light bulb turns into a visitor from Alpha Centauri.

Autostasis is just the opposite. A moving object seems to stand still. That would explain the sudden starting and stopping of blobs or ships.

Another common optical illusion is mistaking the motion of a car or train for the apparent motion of an object in the sky. This is why the moon seems to chase you occasionally.

Marc D’Addio, the local Earthling who saw the lights over Long Island Sound off Milford, is not convinced by mundane explanations.

"I have five other people who were with me to confirm (what we saw) as well as a friend who saw them from a different locations the same night. We have no idea what they were. ... There’s no way they’re any airplane or helicopter. They’re virtually silent," D’Addio wrote in an e-mail.

Silent, however, just means sound waves didn’t reach ears, Fulmer said. A passenger jet that passes at high altitude is also inaudible, but it’s making a lot of noise.

Which brings us to small objects that are close but appear to be far away, and distant large objects that seem close, such as Venus.

What else could be at work? Kites, balloons, airplanes, model airplanes, blimps, lenticular clouds, reflections, mirages, fireworks, birds, insects, parachute spiders, planes flying in formation, helicopters, meteors, ball lightning, hoaxes, doctored photos — and none of the above, which no one can explain.

Even trained observers are notoriously bad at estimating speed, size and altitude. Over the years, reports have included observational conclusions unquestioningly.

For example, in March 1985, some unidentified people in Derby and Ansonia reported seeing a brightly lit aircraft with four or five white lights making an "X." What they really saw was four or five lights, which they assumed must be a flying machine.

A "diamond-shaped craft" delineated by lights, could be an airplane, ultralight plane or four bright stars.

"You need a report from someone who can’t afford to look like a fool," Fulmer said. Few people want to appear foolish, so almost all reports are made by unidentified people.

"There are aliens out there," Fulmer said. "But we’re a grain of sand on a beach," one of countless unexceptional solar systems in the Milky Way galaxy.

How and why aliens would select one grain of sand over another, we don’t know.

Disc-Like Objects Photographed over North Central Texas
September, 2008-I was photographing the sky on two different days because the clouds were unusual, one day very lacy, and the sunset was nice the next day; and both times very pretty. I did not see the discs until I was zooming in on the photographs to see the detail. Both objects seem disc-like and shiny.

I seem to be having a fair number of recent sightings and am so glad to have captured these on digital media, even though I did not notice them at the time.

These were taken the middle of the first week in September, in North Central Texas. The photos were taken with a Sony Cybershot 7.2 megapixel camera on automatic settings. I also noticed that another person from NCT, very near by, has also submited a report with photos of similar object.

UPDATE - More UFO Sightings in Orange Lights 'Mystery'
An artist's impression of the orange lights being spotted over Louth (Image by Gemma Gadd)
    Published Date: 09 September 2008

    By Gemma Gadd

Tuesday 3pm - MORE sightings of orange light 'UFOs' over Louth have been witnessed recently – leading some to suggest the mystery is far from solved.

As the Leader reported last week, Legbourne residents Jeff and Eve Sardeson spotted three orange orbs moving silently across the sky from their garden on August 24.

Now others have come forward to say they saw similar lights last Saturday, September 6.

One witness, David Winfarrah from Louth, said the encounter left him shook up: "I was walking near the old malt kiln at around 9.30pm and saw an orange light hovering and moving around in an erratic way before disappearing. I didn't know what it was and it really shook me up so I turned back for home shaking."

David Howard from Louth said he also saw orange lights on Saturday night: "I was outside my house with a neighbour looking towards Grimsby and saw three of the lights moving across the sky in the same pattern."

On reader suggestions they could have been sky lanterns, Mr Howard added: "There wasn't much breeze that night, and if they were sky lanterns I would have expected some flickering or variation in their flight pattern, but there wasn't."

However, as previously reported, some readers who claim the truth is out there have contacted the Leader with their theories.

Ellie Butler from South Ormsby claimed to have seen one of the orbs up close, as she explained: "The orange lights had me confused too as I was at Cadwell recently and spotted one.

"However the next night I witnessed the truth - they were indeed sky lanterns. One set off from a tent near ours and headed off towards Louth with a beautiful orange glow."

She added: "So I am afraid the UFO is now an identified flying object."

100 Foot Wide UFO Encountered in New Jersey, 1950's
    UFO-Depiction
Being the sole competent witness of this event, my elderly mother-in-law requested I file this report on her behalf. She would do so herself if her vision were better.

The sighting occurred on a clear summer night in either 1957 or 1958. She, her husband, their two young children, her husband's sister and sister's husband were returning from a drive-in movie.

At the in-laws' home, as everyone started to exit the parked car, she glanced over the house toward the open fields and saw what she thought was a blimp trying to land. She shouted to the others to look.

It was then that they all realized that it wasn't a blimp. Based on the tree-line behind the field, they estimated that it was a disk-shaped craft hovering about 100 ft above the field at a distance of less than 200 ft away. It had an even spacing of lights in its middle, with no visible windows or sound. The craft was estimated at being 100 ft. wide.

They all quickly ran into the house and hid the children in the bedroom. When the men went back outside a few minutes later, the craft was gone. They agreed never to speak of this with anyone including their families, and they didn't. Their children, now in their 50's, were young and don't remember the event.

The current location puts the craft's position northwest of the "Bobby Chez Seafood Restaurant" on Hurffville-Cross Keys Road, Sewell, Gloucester County, New Jersey. The field was located on the west side of the road an equal distance from the restaurant and the Cross Key Bypass.

    California-Dark Craft Seen
09-08-08-I was standing on the cliff on West Cliff Dr. next to my taxi, overlooking the Monterey Bay, when a dark airborne craft flew from over the bay to the unincorporated area of Live Oak near the Radio Towers of KSCO at 24th Ave. I was observing from a mile away in clear sky.

The event lasted two or more seconds. As the craft neared the shore, the city lights reflected off the leading edge of the disc object, or the craft blinked its front lights over one fourth of its circumference. It was moving at 2-3 hundred miles per hour, at a steady altitude of 800 feet. It then went stealth and disappeared. source: www.mufon.com

    Massachusetts-Orbs, Boomerang Shape
09-07-08-The first object I saw, approximately 4:00 PM, EST, was when I was coming from my back yard to the front yard, west to east, and I happened to look up to see a white orb about 500' up moving east with lightning fast speed zoom across the sky, and just before it went out of sight it split into two orbs moving away from one another at a 45 degree angle.

Ten minutes later, while coming out of my basement door, I looked up again to see 4 white orbs in a "missing man" boomerang formation heading west, and they just faded from view, they just vanished into thin air and not by shooting out of view-they just disappeared.

I live directly under the approach path to Logan Airport, east of my location, in Temple, MA. They were just pure white orbs, and NOT convention aircraft in any way. source: www.mufon.com

New York-More Witnesses to Staten Island, NY Sighting
September-2008-I was reading a story on your webpage under "Featured," and was surprised to see a similar story that my sister called me with. She lives in Staten Island, NY, and saw the UFOs in question on Labor Day weekend.

A friend of hers in Queens called and saw the same thing. Same description. The stories were so similar, I thought she wrote it! I would imagine many more people saw this. She reported it to the local newspaper. This is the story I'm referring to:

08-31-08-I was in Staten Island, NY last night (8/31/08) at a BBQ and several of us spotted something in the sky. It was orange and fuzzy, and it looked like there were flames burning inside the disc-shaped flying object. I have a video of it on my camera (standard 7.0 megapixels Olympus) when it was flying away.

I was wondering if you have heard of anything that looks like this? My friend who was in Brooklyn also claims to have seen the same object. Any information that you may know would be great if you could pass along. sent by E.-source: www.ufocasebook.com

    Canada-Object Doubles in Size
09-03-08-I was sitting in my living room in Coquitlam facing towards Golden Ears in Maple Ridge, and in the corner of my eye, I saw a very bright object coming up from behind the mountains, as if it was like someone was taking a metal object and reflecting the shine into my eyes. So I got up to look out the window, and it slowly rose higher and higher, still shining very bright. It was about the size of a star, and then doubled in size.

After that for about a minute, it got very small and vanished. I waited about 5 minutes while calling my friend who lives down the street to look outside only to see it come out of the same spot again, from behind the mountains. I was thinking it could be an airplane, but it would not have vanished like that, and be in the same position as it was before. We were both looking at it from our houses when it vanished again, this time not doubling in size. For a third time, it popped up from the mountains again, and started moving to the left, looking like it was curving towards us, and also flying higher, then it vanished. After that, she went to go look for her binoculars, and a fourth time it popped out of the mountains. This time was the weirdest, because I watched it for about 5 minutes as it slowly crept to the right of the mountains. source: www.mufon.com

    India-Orange Lights Observed
2001-I would like to inform you about how I had spotted UFOs in my area. It was sometime in 2001. I am from India. I live in a town called Nigdi that is a suburb of the city Pune in the state of Maharashtra.

One day, I was walking home from my tuitions classes. There is a lake near my house, which was covered by a layer of fog. It was a cool wintery morning.

I noticed two orange lights resembling fireballs coming downward from the sky. They were very quiet and they slowly came down. The lights then disappeared on the other side of the lake. No one was around at the time when I saw it, so I assume I was the only one to have seen it.

I have told very few people about this incident. I was not shocked or anything when I saw it, since it looked natural. This was my report. Abhinav Rao, source: www.ufocasebook.com
