Idaho Man Started America's Flying Saucer Craze
Pilot Kenneth Arnold
KIVI-TV Today's 6: Idaho's News

Newspaper headlines in June, 1947 told the tale of a Boise man's reported UFO sighting; that sighting would set off an out of this world craze.

32 year old Kenneth Arnold was flying from Chehalis, Washington to Boise; when Arnold passed Mount Rainer, he looked out and saw nine objects flying in formation.

That day, more than a half dozen people reported seeing objects in the sky, including Idaho's Lt. Governor ... Donald S. Whitehead.

The media grabbed onto Arnold because he was said to be a straight shooter and was well respected in the Treasure Valley.

The coverage sparked the dawn of the flying saucer age.
