The sighting occurred either 3-12-08 or 3-19-08 (I know it was a Wednesday) at approximately 11:30 PM. I live on one of the lakes in the Lake James Chain about 6 miles west of Fremont in northeastern Indiana. I walked outside to have my last cigarette of the evening and noticed an extremely bright light, very low in the sky to the northeast. I usually go to bed at the same time and smoke before I do, I look in that direction every night and had never seen that light before.
The light was so intense that if I stared at it and then looked away I saw spots for a few seconds until my eyes adjusted. As I was trying to figure out what it was, I thought I noticed it move to the south about an inch in the sky, not thinking this was possible, I decided to line the object up with a tree in my yard so the light was just to the left of the tree in my line of sight. As I watched, the light jumped to the right side of the tree very rapidly and seemed to get brighter. It then became stationary again. I reasoned this was probably caused by an object moving straight at me and then to the south giving me this illusion of rapid movement. What happened next changed that assumption- the light actually was closer to me, and I could see a bright beam of light like a spotlight shining to the south of the object towards the ground. This beam turned towards me and I would estimate the object to be about a half mile away from me, as the beam turned towards my direction, I saw the second light. The object now looked exactly like a car driving towards me about a half mile up in the sky! The only description of the object I can give is, as the light turned towards me, I could see the outline of the object briefly, it was oval shaped about the size of a mini-van at that distance. It had 2 headlights extremely bright. It was moving much faster towards my location and there was absolutely no sound. It moved like a helicopter and was now over the lake about 1000 feet up. The dogs in the area starting barking very loudly from all around the lake but there was no sound from the object. At this point I had finished my second cigarette and got a chill down my spine (I do not scare easily). I decided if it came any closer to me I was going to head for the house and call the police to see if they knew what it was. The object hovered over the lake for about 2 minutes and then accelerated towards the south so suddenly it startled me, in less than a second it was out of my sight and the dogs stopped barking. About a minute later, a passenger jet flew over about 5 miles up and I could hear that sound very clearly (the dogs did not react to it). As far as the weather it was kind of cold, there was enough visibility to see the passenger jet lights blinking. I had always been a UFO skeptic, but now I am not so sure.
