The MUFON open files today, 09-20-09, were inundated with reports of a cone-shaped light, shrouded in mist.

The files are constantly updated, and I am posting what I found at about 9:30 AM, but you get the idea.

If anyone has an idea of what this object/light was, please let us know. Some of the states making reports were Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and also Nova Scotia in Canada.

I have edited the reports for content, but no facts were changed.

I have also included two drawings made by witnesses from Maine, and Pennsylvania. If anyone has any additional information of interest to add to these reports, please let us know.

Connecticut - 09-19-09 - So around 8 o'clock tonight I was working with the children I nanny. We had gotten back from dinner, and I put the rental movie in the DVD player and went out to my car to look for the book I brought to read. It was a crisp, clear September night in Fairfield with not a cloud in the sky and a million stars.

As I was walking back to the house, I happened to look up and stopped in my tracks. About 150 feet above the tree line, a bright, circular orb of light hung in the air. It looked like a meteor but stopped in its tracks, really low to the ground and as bright as the moon would have been. What was really strange was that it seemed to be emanating a fog just around that area.

That was what first caught my attention, not the light, but this patch of fog, connected to nothing, 400 feet in the air. Underneath the orb, the fog was catching the light so a cone (like from a flashlight beam) appeared underneath the orb. I've never seen anything like it in my life!

Maine - 09-19-09 - Witness made drawing. I was driving home from my brother's house with my son around 8:15 PM, when I looked off to my left which would be looking southwest. While driving west on West Main St., I looked up and noticed a cone-shaped beam of light that was whitish in color.

There seemed to be a fog or mist accompanied with the light. The object/light didn’t seem to be that high up and was at about 45 degrees up from the horizon. I told my son to look at the object, and he was kind of surprised to see this as we had previously seen some strange lights in the sky 2 weeks earlier.

We witnessed this light and mist for maybe a minute and it appeared stationary, then it just vanished like smoke dissipating. Sorry for the crude drawing.

Maine - 09-19-09 - At around 8 PM, myself and two friends were standing outside in one of said friend's yards. We were talking about who knows what when friend 1 says "What the **** is that?" Friend 2 and myself turned to see a brilliant white star/ball/sphere/dot in the sky.

It appeared to be above the trees and off to the south of us. It had a cone of light shining towards the ground much like a streetlight and fog-like light around it. The "streetlight" did not make it to the ground but instead faded out above the trees. After about 10 seconds, it disappeared. The fog and "streetlight" slowly disappeared after about 45 seconds.

Maryland - 09-19-09 - I stood facing east or southeast from a friend's yard looking over the clear horizon. About 7:55 PM, I looked back as my friend was exiting his house, I then repositioned my eyes and saw a glow of a white triangle coming down from Venus.

At that point, a neighbor who was sitting on his porch down the street, got up in astonishment from what I could tell, then went back inside and apparently told his family as they came out with him to view the sky. The light lasted for about 30 seconds to a minute.

Maryland - 09-19-09 - What first appeared to be the search light from a helicopter was actually more comet-like on close inspection. The cone-shaped light seemed to shower down from a bright spot at the apex of the cone. I began to consider if it was a search light from a craft, falling space debris, a comet, or an alien portal.

Then the light blinked out and the cone of light started to very slowly vanish/dissipate/dissolve/fade from the apex to the base ,which still had a very distinct outline though it was fading in intensity of light. When the light began to fade I thought it was a cloud obscuring the object/light.

New York - 09-19-09 - Four of my friends and I were sitting outside the Taco Bell parking lot and one of my friends looked in the sky and said "What is that?" We looked and saw a bright light hovering and dropping a cone-shaped light from the bright light and after 30 seconds of staring at it, it disappeared and what looked like a light fog or mist seemed to just float where the object was hovering.

We all were overly excited and ecstatic... we still do not understand what we saw... we've been trying to debunk it and there is nothing we could think of or ever seen... it was the unknown.

New Jersey - 09-19-09 - I was outside with my wife and children enjoying a very clear evening just past dusk. The stars were mostly visible, but there was still a faint light from sunset left.

Off to the South approximately 30-40 degree elevation, appeared a bright light shining downward, that was illuminating a cone directly underneath.

Pennsylvania - 09-19-09 - Lancaster - We were in our backyard, when the light drew our attention. We thought it was a police helicopter, but then realized it was much larger and without any sound.

We only saw it for about eight seconds, but it appeared as a veil of light descending several hundred feet from the sky.

The light intensity was not powerful at first glance, but the source was consistent and appeared to be from a broad base (see sketch), versus a single spotlight. There were no mechanical sounds to be heard, although we thought we could hear what we believed to be a single, high-pitched, long blast sound from an air balloon. After eight seconds it quickly faded.

West Virginia - 09-19-09 - My parents were at their vacation home in Berkeley Springs, WV. They were looking in the sky for comets and planets, like they usually do. The sky was very clear last night.

They saw an object in the sky. It was a large, bright, white, circular light. The object seemed to hover. They watched it for a few seconds and the object began to emit a misty cone-shape light beneath it.

This lasted a few more seconds. They report the light disappeared into the object and object suddenly shot straight up into the sky at a very fast speed and disappeared. They heard no sound during this event.

Nova Scotia, Canada - 09-19-09 - To begin I have to say that never in my life would I have thought twice about reporting a UFO event. I've always thought the subject interesting ,but I never gave any of it much thought. That was before last night.

My family and I were driving home from a dinner with my grandparents. It was dark with many stars in the sky. I was listening to my Ipod when my brother said that there was something weird in the sky. This was at 8:50 PM (Atlantic time, 7:50 PM eastern). Everyone in my family was transfixed on this light emanating from the sky.

At first I thought it was a search helicopter, but at a second glance I realized how far up it was and the light was too intense. There were no sounds that would have indicated it was a helicopter. The source of light began with the point in the sky and broadened as it descended to earth. It had a cone shape.
