Two Photographs Submitted from Wiltshire, England

Wiltshire, England

Here are my two images of unknowns.

First picture - March 21, 2009

This was taken at Westbury Hill in Wiltshire, England, on March 21, 2009. This is a hang-gliding and para-gliding site I fly regularly. It shows a para-glider flying away from the camera. The second picture taken about a second after the first one shows a distant blurred object that wasn't in the first image.

The object is beyond the para-glider because you can see the para-glider's lines in front of the object.

The day had exceptional visibility and only high cirrus contrails above 30,000 feet. The object is blurred despite the fast shutter speed the fact that the object is opposite the sun position, which should have lighted it up clearly, yet it looks in shadow.

I believe it is another of those distant, fast-moving, blurry, grey objects that appear in pictures and on videos, but which we don't actually see.

I have spent my life in aviation and I know the sky and the denizens seen in it. This is a strange one that I can't explain at all.

Second picture - May 15, 2006

This was taken at Westbury Hill in Wiltshire, England on May 15, 2006. I was flying my para-glider at the time on a fantastically clear day, and I saw something odd flying past the sun. I thought it might be a bird of prey as there was no noise, so I used my 10 x optical zoom digital camera to take this photo.

The bright near-sun gave a very fast shutter speed. (I always fly with a camera to take pictures for my paragliding photo web site at www.wingsoverwestbury.co.uk). You can check out this site of Westbury para-gliding photos and see that I am bona-fide if you wish.

I take most of my para-gliding pics while airborne because they are more dramatic and interesting than those taken on the ground. The image shows a structured object of some sort. I took another picture too, but it didn't auto-focus because of the sun, and was blurred.

This isn't a kite or a model plane, although both are flown at Westbury. I am used to flying among them, and this object disappeared in the bright sky toward the southwest. There might be prosaic explanation but I can't identify the object.

Hope these are of interest.
