Tibor Sós, a researcher within the League of Hungarian UFO Researchers, had the opportunity to conduct an interview with a retired captain of the Hungarian Air Force, who at the same time is an electrical engineering technician. The witness' name is András F., whose full name the League is not willing to convey for reasons of privacy.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of April 27th, 1992 at an air defense battery not far from the Hungarian town of Érd.
The witness had suddenly awoke in the officers' sleeping room at around 4:00 AM, he immediately and – as he said to the interviewer – out of a professional habit – walked to the window to scan the sky. The first thing that had caught his attention was a peculiar cloud formation, and the next thing he perceived was a strange, saucer-like shape with flashing lights all around.
The lights had all the colors of the rainbow. He also heard a deep humming sound, which according to the witness' testimony, was much deeper than any sound familiar with him from the turbines of either civil crafts or the then contemporary soviet military crafts. The sound was a droning one and so intense that even the window panes resounded.
Due to the fact that at the time the airspace of neighboring Yugoslavia was already being monitored by the USA because of the tensions in the country, which then was on the brink of civil war, F. thought that an F-117 stealth bomber was prowling through the night sky.
He considered it as an interesting challenge to direct the radar's guide beam towards a stealth bomber. On the one hand, he was interested how the craft would reflect the beam, on the other hand, he wanted to test out his supervisors' reaction. At the time, the Hungarian Air Force had been informed about the activities of the US, and the Hungarian generals did not wish military personnel to track American planes in action.
Thus, he hurried to the command post to inquire whether anything was to be seen on the radar screens. The answer of the soldier under his command was negative, but by reason of the fact that he had the impression that the object was so big and so loud that the soldier must have perceived it if he had been attentive, he was already preparing for a serious scolding because he suspected him of having dozed off during the object's appearance.
Before this, he wanted to further observe the object, so he hurried to a watchtower at some 20 meters distance. The way there led over a path through the woods.
When walking on the path, a sudden fear overcame him, a kind of fear that he had never before experienced in his life. The whole atmosphere seemed to be charged with static electricity, which he could even feel pinching his skin.
Since he wanted to locate the source of the phenomenon, he looked round - and there he saw the object again at a distance of about 10-15 meters at a height of roughly three meters.
The first idea that shot through his mind was that the F-117 he had previously suspected could have come down. But on a closer look at the object, he immediately realized that he was confronted with something far more strange.
It was a disc-shaped UFO of about 15-20 meters in diameter, hovering over the ground; the object had four windows from beyond which there came a pinkish light.
He also saw a humanoid figure, and his first overall impression was that he was right at the moment confronting a hostile intruder. Then his feelings of hostility were replaced with curiosity, and he wanted to go nearer to the craft.
The witness stated that he was even thinking of going aboard. All his efforts were thwarted, because he was prevented by an unknown force. The being lifted his right hand, then suddenly the craft's lights blanked out.
On struggling on, the witness was overwhelmed by an ever increasing feeling of nausea – he finally passed out. When he came to, the craft had entirely disappeared. Unfortunately, the incident ended F.'s military career.
As he told the reporter, the event had destroyed him both psychically and physically. The thought that as a commander, he could have been the victim of a hallucination was particularly onerous to him, not in the least because Érd is quite close to the capital, Budapest.
Moreover, he decided not to report the incident although this would have been his duty. The following 15 years, he was psychologically treated, and only once did he try to explain what had happened on the hideous night to a psychiatrist, who dismissed the case as mere nonsense. After the treatment, he was finally considered to be healthy again, and today he does UFO research.
The witness had been accepted to the military academy with the best medical bulletins, and every third year, medical examinations were made including a psychological test, which he had always passed with excellent results.
