Gulfport, Mississippi - 1965
When I was younger my friends and I observed a massive orange-white light on the ground in Gulfport, MS. We, the five of us, had walked to our friends' house to get some of their night clothing to bring back to our house.
As we approached their home which was one house down from ours, we spotted this huge light in the field of the Gulfport Seabee Base. We were all looking at this tremendous orange light on top and white on the bottom trying to wrap our mind around what we were seeing.
One of the guys at first said that it was a tent. There were no soldiers running around or driving their vehicles though, and the tent would have to have been massive with a lot of busy preparation which our neighborhood would have witnessed beforehand.
Plus the light being emitted from this thing was intensely brilliant so we ruled out a tent. Plus we were just out front of their house approximately 30 to 45 minutes before noticing this huge light.
Then someone said that it was a fire, but the edges of the light never moved nor were they ragged with some of the edges burning higher or lower. This was a steady burning light with a clearly distinct dome shape.
Also there was nothing to have burned in that field so intensely since it was mostly weeds and a small patch of trees right behind where the light was. There was no activity around this motionless dome of light at any time during our observance of us watching it.
The others lost interest and went inside to get their pajamas and toothbrushes, but my best friend and I stayed there to observe it. It would not have been a quarter mile away from us, but there was no way we would have trespassed onto the base.
There were signs posted around the perimeter of the barbed wire fence and none of us would have dared to trespass on government property. After the other three had come out with their things and started back toward my house I couldn't understand their disinterest in something so HUGE! This was clearly something inexplicable to us.
There were no planes landing nearby since the airport was on the other side of Gulfport about 12 miles away. This was not a ship designed to float on water either. There had never been anything in this field except that small patch of trees and weeds and patches of grass.
I have often wished that I had dared to go the next morning to look on the ground to see if there were burn marks or if those trees had branches snapped or broken off... there was absolutely nothing there to be seen the next morning.
Whatever the light had been was up and gone the next day when I walked my friend home. After the other three left us my friend and I became spooked. I wanted to stay longer but she took off running and I took off after her.
This memory has stayed with me for 40 years and I tell it now for safekeeping when I am gone. I think of this and the memory and the immensity and the intense light which shone from it are just as clear as if it happened an hour ago.
I for one believe as I did that night that what we were seeing was a UFO. I will always believe this.
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to report this.
Sincerely, Susan D.
An addendum to my post was that the night was a warm, cloudless evening approximately 8:45 in the late evening. I do not remember there being a moon that night. It was a typical Gulf Coast night during our summer break of that year. July, 1965
Also after reading other descriptions which I should have put in my report is that there were absolutely no flashing lights. The intensity of the orange light on top with white around the bottom remained steady with no blinking or wavering.
Also I reported that with the UFO only about a quarter mile away we should have heard something as well. We saw no movements on the ground around the light and surely we would have heard the shouts and seen the silhouettes of soldiers or vehicles had this been manmade.
It was that close to us. There was absolute quiet except for us talking and questioning what this thing was. Absolute amazement is what I felt that something so huge could just appear out there in that field.
I've always wondered if the houses to the west of those had seen the same thing that night or if there were any lights reported. We were living only about a mile from the beach as well, and I have often wondered if the ship needed water.
We had another sighting here back during the summer of 2012. A tourist filmed a UFO hovering out over the water for quite a while. It was south of the Gulfport Harbor. I was amazed to see it online.
Also there had been a sighting in downtown Gulfport a few days before. Gulfport is right on the water of the Gulf of Mexico.
