Some stories are downright strange. Here's our wrap-up from around Northern Suffolk and the East End.
As a local news organization, Patch covers stories of all kinds, from heartbreaking tragedies to inspiring tales of community brotherhood. But some stories are just plain weird. Here are some of the stranger headlines from the past seven days.
Fire in the Sky?
While UFO legends aren't exactly uncommon on Long Island – Camp Hero in Montauk? The Shirley UFO Crash? – you'd think clandestine alien space travelers would pick a less conspicuous destination than an island stacked with 3 million people on the outskirts of one of the world's biggest cities.
You'd think, right?
Turns out December and January have been busy months for UFO sightings in the area, according to UFO Digest, which this week wrapped up three alleged accounts, including this one out of Mastic Beach from Jan. 7.
"At first it appeared to me to be like an asteroid falling from the sky. It was A really bright light almost square in shape with a trail behind it falling straight down. I decided I wanted to get to the shoreline as fast as possible to get a better view with no trees blocking my view, which is when things got really weird.
The object stopped at about a 60 degree angle off of the horizon. We then observed a smaller bright orange light that was also remaining stationary in the sky. We stayed there for about 15 minutes and they didn't really move much then kind of just faded out."
Meanwhile, on Jan. 4, people in Farmingdale uploaded a video to YouTube of three orbs in the sky. The upload dates show's it's from this past New Year's Eve, but the date printed in the video says Jan. 1, 2102.
