THE circle of light hovered and slowly changed colour; first to green, then blue, orange, then silver.

Within seconds, he knew: it was an Unidentified Flying Object.

York resident Nicholas D’Arcy-Walker was travelling home along Great Eastern Highway last week when he first noticed the strange light in the sky.

Determined to get a better look, he pulled over into a car park near Nichols Street, in Mundaring.

As he watched, Mr. D’Arcy-Walker said the UFO changed shape from oval to oblong as lights on the top and bottom of the craft became more visible.

“They looked like glace cherries and emitted a strange glow,” he said.

Mr. D’Arcy-Walker took out his mobile phone and began filming. He spent the next two hours witnessing the spectacle.

Four of the films have been posted on the internet site YouTube. The clearest of the quartet quickly received more than 330 hits from UFO buffs around the globe.

Mr. D’Arcy-Walker said he acknowledged many people would be skeptical of his experience, but he said he knows what he saw.

“A lot of people will think this is airy-fairy stuff, but it’s not,” the 60-year-old said. “I could see it clearly and in detail… it was truly an awe-inspiring sight.

“I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, and I don’t do drugs.

“I am a very sane person and I can tell you this was definitively a UFO.”

Perth Observatory technical manager Arie Verveer said a UFO was “an incredible thing” that required |||“an incredible amount of evidence” to prove its existence.

“People do see things that are unidentified but many can be explained,” he said.

High-altitude jets, home-made hot air balloons made from garbage bags, and objects low on the horizon that reflected spectral colours all had been mistaken for UFOs, Mr. Verveer said.

“There has never been conclusive evidence that UFOs are real,” he said.

“But if there ever was, the scientific community would be very interested indeed.”
