Depending on how you look at it, there is either an easy answer or more complications to the UFO sighting by a Bristol Township man last weekend.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, reported that he, his wife and his daughter sighted an unidentified flying object from their home just before 8 p.m. Saturday. The family lives near the Fox River north of Yorkville.

They said they saw two lights moving east northeast, with colors ranging from red, orange, yellow and pink.

The lights “were together either one in front of the other or side by side and going at a pretty good clip and in the eastern sky,” he said.

The man reported what he saw to the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON, which included it on their website. After the original story ran in The Beacon-News, another area resident, also wishing to remain anonymous, said he might have an explanation.

In an e-mail, he said his family set off two lanterns in Yorkville “that night, around that time, in that area.”

“They were a tribute to my deceased dad and son for my mom’s 70th birthday party,” the man wrote. He said he wished to remain anonymous because he was unsure if what he did was legal.

The first man admitted the lights looked like they could be lanterns, but he had discarded that explanation originally because there seemed to be almost no wind Saturday — not enough to carry a lantern in the manner he witnessed.

“I’m just glad to get an explanation,” he said.

But on Wednesday, another possible explanation surfaced. Hank Kobulnicky of Oswego, a seasoned commercial airline pilot, said he was “100 percent positive” the sighting was man-made space junk re-entering the atmosphere.

“In my many years of night flight I have seen countless small ones and twos re-enter with the colors noted by the viewers in your feature,” Kobulnicky wrote in an e-mail.

“Of course the parts flew in formation in their path to destruction.”

The sighting remains listed on MUFON’s website, www.mufon.com, and there is a claim from MUFON that someone has a video of the sighting. But no one has been able to open the video file to see it.
