... there was a pale green circular light that was rotating slowly on a horizontal axis

Ipstones, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST10 2LP, UK, October 1991

Have just found your excellent website and decided to record an experience I had over 20 years ago.

The wife and I rented a holiday cottage adjoining the owner’s farm for a week or so. As with so many of your contributors, about midnight I let our dog out of the kitchen door and into the small garden for a quick constitutional before going to bed.

The rear of the cottage faced onto fields and in the distance, about 200M away there was a pale green circular light that was rotating slowly on a horizontal axis rather like a light-house.

I estimated that this light was about 2M in diameter and 4M off the ground and was not a dazzling light; in fact it did not seem to illuminate any of the grass field that was between the cottage and the object. The shape of the object it was attached to could not be discerned, but I imagined it to be rather like a short squat cylinder.

It was a clear night; there was no wind or even a breeze and absolutely no noise so it wasn’t a chopper. The dog was calm throughout all of this and the wife disinterested and half asleep in bed.

I watched the light for about 5 minutes, brought the dog in and decided to monitor the light from within the safety of the cottage. However, when looking out of the window the light and presumably the object that it was attached to, were gone.

About 10 minutes later I looked out of the bedroom window, which covered the same area and saw no green light but instead saw what seemed like a torch beam playing on the patio. The source of the light could not be seen by looking upwards; it seemed as though someone was on the roof of the building shining a torch downwards.

What struck me immediately was that this was unlikely as the light was perfectly round and not oval in shape as it would have been when striking the ground at an angle, so must have been coming from directly above.

I felt insecure as I can remember feeling that this was trying to tempt me outside. Feeling somewhat spooked I closed the curtains and went to bed. Nothing further was heard or seen that night.

The next day I saw the farmer and described what I’d seen and he put it down to some local lads known to him and ‘lamping’ for rabbits; this is where you drive a 4x4 with no lights on into a field then switch on headlights, spot lights and any other lights, the rabbits are mesmerised staring into the lights and that’s when you shoot them.

I dismissed this in my own mind for a couple of reasons: (I) there was absolute silence, no gunfire or ‘cracks’ from an air rifle, (ii) the green searchlight I saw would be no good for the ‘bunnies in headlights’ trick; ‘Lampers’ only use white or red lights.

No websites in those days! I reported my alleged sighting to BUFORA, on a hand written form supplied by them. I received back a very nice letter from Jenny Randles, then Director of Investigations thanking me and stating that there had been another interesting case only 3 months previously and just 3 miles away. The report was as follows:-

"A witness known only as Mr. M L was visiting friends in the Churnet Valley, Staffs, on July 19, 1991, when he saw an object fall from the sky at nearby Ipstones.

"The time was 10 pm. M L described the object as metallic - like aluminum - 10ft long, cigar-shaped and very bright. He immediately contacted police.

They searched the woodland and bog. A helicopter was used as well. No object was located but an area of newly-broken branches was found which gave the impression that something had crashed through the trees from above. The search was eventually abandoned."

She also mentioned that the area had been ‘haunted’ by a phantom helicopter since 1964. Whether these are related to my experience or not we will never know.

Did I see an Unidentified Flying Object? Thinking rationally: it was certainly ‘Unidentified,’ but I did not see anything actually ‘Flying’, nor did I see any ‘Object.’

All I saw were unexplained lights in the middle of nowhere that must have been attached to something that was not there at dusk or sunrise. This has always been something I cannot explain or forget and what has stayed with me ever since, is the deep feeling of insecurity I had at that time.
