reported seeing an unidentified flying object (UFO) thrice...

The Indian Air Force has been deployed to step-up security at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi.

Security personnel working at the airport have been unnerved for some time with the appearances of suspicious flying objects.

A meeting of the Intelligence Bureau, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Bureau for Civil Aviation Security and the Delhi Police sought the assistance of the IAF to look out for any such aerial threat.

On Friday, an IAF staffer, while keeping a watch over the airport from the air traffic control (ATC) tower, reported seeing an unidentified flying object (UFO) thrice.

The first one flew over runway 9-27 at 10.44am local time and the other two flew outside the airport's boundary at 10:50am and 10:55am, the local media reported.

"We have put everyone on alert as we do not want to take any risks, especially with the VIP movements due to the India-Africa Forum Summit."

The flying objects were reported to be eight nautical miles away from the airport.

The IAF had even sent a chopper to track the UFOs but it failed to locate any such thing.

In a separate incident last week, an ATC employee reportedly saw a drone-like object flying over the runway on Tuesday, though he couldn't provide any video or photograph as an evidence to support his claim.

The pilot of a domestic airline touching down at the airport on Wednesday night complained of being distracted by a laser beam when he was six nautical miles away from runway 29.

Use of laser beams in areas around the airport is prohibited under the Indian law.

An airport official was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying: "Even the ATC radar couldn't capture anything on Tuesday. No one is sure as to what is happening. But we have put everyone on alert as we do not want to take any risks, especially with the VIP movements due to the India-Africa Forum Summit."

IAF has been ordered to shoot down any suspicious flying objects and the CISF has been asked to keep a keen watch of the air side.

In November 2006, a similar report lodged at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport claimed that 12 airport employees and even people outside the airport witnessed a metallic, saucer-shaped craft, supposedly a UFO, hovering over Gate C-17 for approximately two minutes.
