UFOs visited the US missile bases during 1940s

Edgar Mitchell, a retired NASA astronaut and the sixth man on earth to walk on the moon, has come up with some new claims about UFOs (unidentified flying objects) and extra terrestrial visitors to earth.
According to Mitchell, Aliens visited earth on peace missions to avert nuclear war between the US and Soviet Union at the start of the Cold War.
Apart from being the famous NASA astronaut and the proud sixth man to walk on moon during Apollo 14 mission in 1971, Edgar Mitchell is also known for his bizarre claims regarding existence of aliens. He has regularly talked about this belief in aliens ever since he visited moon. However, he never presented any independent evidence in support of his claims.
The 84-year-old Texan now says that UFOs visited the US missile bases during 1940s when Americans were busy testing their nuclear weapons and missiles.
According to Mitchell, UFOs were seen hovering over the famous White Sands Proving Ground, located in the New Mexico desert, when US detonated the world's first nuclear bomb at this spot on July 16, 1945. Mitchell said the high-ranking officials of US military at that time saw those UFOs.
"White Sands was a testing ground for atomic weapons - and that's what the extra-terrestrials were interested in." Mitchell told Mirror Online.
"They wanted to know about our military capabilities. My own experience talking to people has made it clear the ETs had been attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth."
According to Mitchell, several officers posted at Pacific bases had narrated him the stories about how several American missiles were shot down by UFOs.
"I have spoken to many Air Force officers who worked at these silos during the Cold War. They told me UFOs were frequently seen overhead and often disabled their missiles." Mitchell said.
According to Mitchell, it is likely that real-life aliens are similar to what people think about them - a small frame with large eyes and head. Mitchell also believes that technology of aliens is far superior to technology on earth and "had they been hostile," they would have completely wiped out the life on earth.
Many people who believe in UFO argue that it can't be a coincidence that reports of spotting of UFOs started coming shortly after atomic weapons were developed on earth. They say it was because aliens were alerted to the threats that were being posed by humans to cosmos.
Nick Pope, a former Ministry of Defense UFO researcher, has dismissed all the claims made by Dr Mitchell, stating that his thoughts are based on second-hand reports.
"Edgar Mitchell is an honorable and truthful man, who I've had the privilege of meeting." Pope told DailyMail.
"But so far as I'm aware, most of his information on this issue comes not from things he's experienced himself, but from things he's been told by others."
"Even where Mitchell's sources are genuine, how do we know they have access to classified information about UFOs?"
Pope said it is ironical that peoples' belief in UFOs was sometimes encouraged secretly by governments. The reason was that if people spot some "secret prototype aircraft or drone," it was much easier to have it reported as a UFO.
According to Pope, there were certainly some genuine but unexplained UFO sighting incidents around military bases, but they can't be called extraterrestrial for sure.
Several years ago, Dr Mitchell, at a radio show, had also claimed that the Roswell cover up was real.
"This is really starting to open up ….. I think we're headed for real disclosure and some serious organizations are moving in that direction." he said at that time.
However, his claims were quickly played down by NASA officials.
NASA said that it doesn't track UFOs and is "not involved in any sort of cover up about alien life on this planet or anywhere in the universe."
"Dr Mitchell is a great American, but we do not share his opinions on this issue." NASA stated at that time.
