PINEDALE – Last week, the U.S. Air Force declassified thousands of documents that made up Project Blue Book and were released into the public domain. The Project Blue Book papers relate to the reported sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) throughout the U.S. over several decades in the last century.

Due to Wyoming’s population, relatively few sightings were reported over the years in the state; however, one of the more interesting incidents originated near Pinedale and had officials at the Air Force stumped.

On Oct. 9, 1958, a Cheyenne surgeon was hunting around 20 miles from Pinedale near the Bridger Wilderness when he saw a bright light in the sky at night. Stopping to observe it, the doctor watched the light for around 15 minutes, saying that it moved erratically and changed in brightness.

While not submitting any photographs, the witness saw it at about 45 degrees on the horizon in a clear sky with no wind.

On the trip with several other doctors, who also reported seeing the phenomenon, the man eventually reported the sighting to the Air Force almost two weeks later on Oct. 20.

He believed that it was possibly a launched missile that had a flight failure. In November of that year, he completed a questionnaire for the Air Force, giving a statement as to his recollection of the night’s events.
