you wouldn’t know if you walked past one...

An undeniable truth about popular legends is where there is a mystery, there is a conspiracy theory. The most mysterious site in the US is Area 51, first reported about by the Los Angeles Times in 2009. It does not appear on any US Geological Survey map, and all satellite images of the area have been deleted by the US government. UFO lobbies accuse the US of hiding the most dangerous secrets in Area 51, including a spacecraft that crashed in a desert and the bodies of aliens killed in the incident.
Many heads of ‘Project Blue Book’, which was established by the US government to study UFO sightings that lasted from 1952-1970, quit alleging a coverup. Though many sightings were identified as aircraft, some remained unexplained and the names of the sightings and witnesses were redacted.
In April, former Canadian Defence minister Paul Hellyer asked world governments to make public hidden documents on UFOs and four different kinds of aliens that have visited Earth. He said extraterrestials have been “visiting our planet for thousands of years”, and do not approve of the way humans live, adding that they “look just like us and they could walk down the street and you wouldn’t know if you walked past one.”
Though many claims have been put forward on aliens who died in crashes—like the Roswell incident and the one that claims an alien was found in Russia that eerily looked like those in Hollywood movies—conspiracy theorists allege that the Indian and Chinese governments are hiding a UFO base in Aksai Chin by mutual agreement.
Dr V Raghavan, retired head of the Sanskrit department of Madras University, quotes centuries-old documents in Sanskrit and claims aliens visited prehistoric India and imparted weapons training. He believes they visited the country 3,500 years ago, and the divine weapons recorded in the epics are ones that were made using extraterrestrial knowledge and skills.
Whatever the reality may be, mankind’s search for truth has been behind the evolution of civilisations. Antiquity has been the map of this voyage. One of these journeys of imagination has been inspired by the mystery of the uncharted universe that looms above as a timeless darkness, embellished by the diamond-dotted nightsky, crowded with planets that keep orbiting in their eternal ellipses with the inexorable force of celestial physics and the audacious fiery trails of comets and meteors that carve the galaxies with spindrifts of fire.
From the age of religious dicatorships, when astronomers could be jailed or excommunicated for even suggesting that Earth revolved around the sun, seekers like Hawking and Milner are attempting to chart a perilous path through the unknown to unlock the mysteries of the Universe. The conclusion of their quest may take millennia to arrive at, by crisscrossing the trajectories of spaceships and myth where encountering Super-man or evansecently blue-skinned Neytiri would be in the realm of possibility.
Meanwhile, all one can say for the time being is “Beam me up, Scotty.”
