Unusual object photographed over Modesto, California

I captured this image tonight (05-21-05) at around 9:00 P M. It streaked across the sky and disappeared over the roof of my house. It was going real fast , whatever it was. I've seen commercial airliners that go over my house and it was probably three times faster. It was a single red bright light. This did not look to be more than a few thousand feet yet there was no sound associated with it.
The size of this object looked as wide as a dime held at an arms length. It went east of here and almost appeared to dive towards the ground. There is not a plane in the world that would dare to dive toward the ground at that speed, unless it were in distress. There have been no planes reported missing in my area, however.
