Late 1980s, Rapid Bay, Australia
Back in the late eighties I was camped on the beach at Rapid Bay, South Australia with seven others. None of us had
consumed any alcohol or drugs.
The night had no moon and was pitch black. The sea was calm and wind almost non-
None of us had any means of telling the time as it was part of the camping experience. At around about
10 PM, directly out from shore, a strange light appeared. The distance is difficult to judge due to the absence of a
visible horizon, but my guesstimate is about 6 Km.
The light took the appearance of four circles arranged in two
concentric pairs. In each pair, one circle was arranged inside the other with the smaller having a diameter about
90% of the larger.
The two annuli were arranged side-by-side at the same height and separated by a distance of about
half the diameter of the two larger circles.
If the lights were the 6 Km estimated distance, the diameter of the
larger circles would have been in the range of 100 meters or more. The color of all four circles was the same pale
The lights were stationary and synchronously faded slowly to the edge of human eye sensitivity and then
slowly brightened until they were clearly visible, but not to the point of casting a trail on the sea surface.
then slowly faded to the point of sensitivity again, brightened again and winked out. The total visible time was
about ten minutes.
Skimpy media reports the following day estimated that about 600 others had witnessed the same.
If the circles had been chem-lights being whirled on strings we would have noticed the whirling motion and, besides,
it would be impossible to keep four chem-lights spinning in such perfect synchronicity and chem-lights can't be
They couldn't have been neon tubes because they were huge.
The water in the area is deep enough for a submarine to operate and the lights may have been some sort of submarine-
based experiment. Rapid Bay is about 1200Km from a supposedly secret USA submarine communications facility and there
may have been a submarine taking field strength measurements.
I make no claim as to the lights being a UFO, submarine or surface vessel. I make the report in case it fills an
information void somewhere.
