Curmudgeon's Corner - A Flying Saucer?
UFO Depiction

A Flying Saucer? In Germantown? In Esquire Estates?

The police were alerted to a suspected sighting according to the Germantown Police report section of this week’s Germantown Now newspaper. Police were unable to confirm the sighting.

First, I no longer reside in Esquire Estates so I was not out flying something trying to spook my neighbors.

Second, however, is the story I was told by an octogenarian resident of Esquire Estates many years ago about his sighting of such an object, a very bright light that moved erratically. He was quite certain it was something extra-terrestrial and always had lamented that he hadn’t alerted someone so that he’d have had some corroboration of his sighting.

My old friend is no longer with us, so I doubt that he had anything to do with this reported sighting although who really knows about such things.

We have friends on the western side of Wisconsin who have had such an experience and who saw the burn marks on a tree outside their rural farm home the next day. They are not, and were not, the kind of people who would’ve consumed too much of something and hallucinated.

They were shaken by the experience and told very few about it for fear they’d be thought to be a bit on the loony side. I have wondered, along with tens of thousands of others about Area 51 in Nevada where our government supposedly has the remains of such a flying object secreted in a hanger so that no one will ever see it. You can imagine the hysteria, the panic, which might erupt if such a sighting were to be proved true.

It may be that we’ll never understand if there are such vehicles but these apparent sightings occur just often enough to make one wonder.

Maybe this was the return of that earlier object that my old friend and former neighbor saw while alone outdoors on the early evening he recalled.

We’ll likely never know for certain during my lifetime, but it is one of those things we can muse about. I always thought Esquire Estates had a special allure. Maybe someone or something else also feels that allure.

Black Drone-like Object with Advanced System Seen over Keaton Beach, Florida
UFO Depiction
Published: 7:31 AM 2/27/2014

Keaton Beach, Florida - 02-17-14

Shape: Oval - Duration: 1 minute

Black Drone with highly advanced propulsion system.

On Monday 2-17-14 at approximately 1 in the afternoon on a warm day with clear blue skies, my wife and I were outside working in our yard. We are located very close to Keaton Beach Fl. in a heavily wooded area.

As I walked up to look at the shrubs my wife was planting, our attention was drawn to the sky by a loud sound of rushing wind.

I expected to see some sort of glider or other aircraft speeding by with the motor off. I say this because the best description I have for the sound is that it sounded like air rushing very quickly over an object or an object moving very quickly through the air, and this happened with absolutely no motor noise present.

To our amazement what we saw was nothing that we recognized. Streaking overhead from our right to our left was something approximately the size of a basketball, but shaped more oval, or similar to a football shape.

The object was a flat black color and resembled a large football flying sideways. My wife got a better look at it than I did, and she described it as looking like a black football with a little round thing on each point, and it was traveling sideways as related to how a football travels.

She also described the sound as air being blown thru a turbo charger, but with no motor noise. The object passed over our heads at just over treetop level, and was moving very fast.

As it passed over us it was also making a hard right hand turn at approximately 90 degrees. The most amazing thing was that we saw and heard this thing fly over our heads and it had no motor noise and no wings.

As it quickly flew out of sight we looked at each other and both said: "Did you see that?"

My first thought afterwards was that we had just witnessed some sort of military drone, however if it was, then it utilized a propulsion system and means of lift and flight that we have not been given knowledge of yet.

I feel fortunate and very excited to have been able to witness this with my wife, however now that I know that things like this are really real; I have a lot more questions.

I am also a little angry because now I’m sure that there is much more advanced technology out there, and we don’t have access to it.

Mysterious ‘Flying Saucer’ Slides Found in Documents Leaked by Edward Snowden
Leaked UFO Photo
Published: 8:46 AM 3/1/2014

Rob Waugh

A document among the trove leaked by Edward Snowden contains slides showing images of flying saucer A mysterious set of slides showing alien spacecraft have cropped up amid the trove of documents released by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden - and ignited a frenzy of debate among internet UFO fans.

The set of slides are part of a Powerpoint presentation created by British spy agency GCHQ - Government Communications Headquarters - and, among 50 uncaptioned images are three which seem to show flying saucers.

Alien-hunters and UFOlogists are now poring over the images - although one of the ‘UFOs’ has been dismissed as an “out of focus picture of a seagull having a poo.”

Nigel Watson, author of the Haynes UFO Investigations Manual says that while the slides may not be evidence of alien invaders, they are the next best thing for conspiracy theorists - evidence of government mind control. The document offers guidelines for spies on how to spread lies on the internet.

Watson says, “The main evidence for the cover-up of UFO reports and manipulation of UFO beliefs, as revealed by the documents released by Edward Snowden, is contained in a Powerpoint presentation called, ‘The Art of Deception: Training for a New Generation of Online Covert Operations.’

“This was produced by the GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters), British secret intelligence agency and features fifty slides related to using the internet for psychological operations (psy-ops). It was produced by a unit called the Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group (JTRIG) for presentations to the US, National Security Agency (NSA) and other agencies.”

Watson says that the slides show that, far from having captured aliens or dissected them, governments fear the power of belief in UFOs - and want to manipulate this for their own ends.

American journalist and author Glenn Greenwald wrote an essay relating to the documents, saying, that it showed goverments were practising techniques “to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets - and to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable.”

Leaked UFO Photo In the Fifties, the CIA feared that people who claimed to have contacted aliens would spread communist-like philosophy, Watson says - or that reports of sightings could be deliberately released to camouflage a nuclear missile attack.

What the new document proves is that governments are still aware of the power of UFOs as a tool for ‘controlling’ the public - and are ensuring they are ready to use this tool in the age of the internet.

“Government agencies are still aware of the power of the belief in UFOs, and that they are willing to use the Internet to exploit these beliefs,” says Watson. “Such deception can be used as a means of covering-up more mundane terrestrial activities (like the testing of secret aircraft or military exercises) or to undermine the credibility of ufologists.”

“The overall point of the presentation is to discuss how the Internet and modern media can be used to discredit people and to spread deception. Unfortunately, there is no explanatory text with the UFO pictures, so we can only speculate about what point they were being used to make.”

What is certain, though, Watson says, is that the document does not provide final proof that earth has been invaded, or even ‘buzzed’ by little green men in flying saucers - the pictures themselves are old, well-known, and widely believed to be fake.

“The presentation features three UFO pictures, on slides 35 to 37. The first is a black and white picture of a UFO over Redbud, Illinois, taken on 23 April 1950, the second a screenshot of a UFO video by Arturo Robles Gil filmed in Mexico and the third was taken on 01 August 2011 by a holidaymaker at Black Head, Trenarren near St. Austell, Cornwall,” Watson says.

“ They have been explained respectively by sceptics as a hub cap thrown in the air, a deflated mylar balloon and an out-of-focus seagull taking a poo.”

The pictures are not convincing proof of the existence of UFOs, but they do indicate that Government agencies like this are aware of the power of UFO images especially today when such images can be easily produced and manipulated.

MUFON - A Continuing Mission
UFO Depiction
Published: 8:57 AM 3/1/2014

HUNTSVILLE, AL--"The mission of MUFON is to scientifically study UFOs for actually the benefit of humanity." Richard Hoffman, Director of the Mutual Unidentified Flying Object Network for both Mississippi and Alabama, said.

The Dayton, Ohio, native has been a member of MUFON since the organization was founded in 1969.

His travels have taken him all over the country, cataloguing and studying alleged UFO sightings.

If you think he's kidding, you'd be wrong. In fact, he says just last year they were busily tracking UFO sightings in our area.

"Alabama, for example, last year had somewhere in the range of about 70 sightings that it reported. Mississippi only had about a half of those reported," Hoffman continued.

But one of those reported sightings, he says, has gained prominence throughout the Network and is being featured on the group's website as the Mississippi Pilot Case.

Hoffman offers radar images of the Mississippi Pilot Case, which, he says, show an object of some kind following alongside a Cessna airplane flown out of Slidell, Louisiana.

"And, as he's approaching, on his approach headed north, he ends up running across this object that was just underneath his wing of his Cessna, that's how close it was," said Hoffman." What we see here is where his plane was and the object moves away and then does this kind of maneuvering.

Eventually it went and made some more turns at 30 miles per hour. Now what flies that fast, does that kind of banking turn and makes that incredible kind of maneuvering, we don't know," he said.

Hoffman says there are as many as 700 sightings reported each month.

Multiply that by twelve, and you see why Hoffman and his members are keeping busy. However, he does caution that sometimes things are not always what they seem.

"Like here's a cloud, a lenticular cloud and we separate out from the clouds as much as we can you know," he joked as he showed a photo from his personal web site.

Others have been other mistakes; he says which turned out to be smudges on a woman's windshield.

But despite the mistakes and even downright skepticism of many, Hoffman and MUFON holds fast that there is something out there watching us and we need to know what it is.

"And that means we have to spend time studying. So we need people who have an interest in it who want to study," replied Hoffman.

Archived Case of the Week

1879 UFO Mothership was over New York City
UFO Depiction
Published: 8:09 AM 3/1/2014

by Cheryl Costa

The glowing circular shaped object was observed by Jersey City, NJ Astronomer Mr. Henry Harrison. The object gave the appearance of hovering at a very high altitude, but Harrison realized that an object would have to be moving at great speed in order to remain overhead as the Earth turned.

Needless to say, this mystified Harrison as he made his remarkable observations because, like it or not, the object was generally stationary even as the stars rose and set behind it.

He watched the object for the better part of three hours when suddenly it sharply changed its direction and began flying eastward. Harrison made additional observations later that night and quickly ruled out the Brorsen’s comet because the object simply wasn’t there any longer; a comet would have been.

Henry was a member in good standing with the Toronto Astronomical Society and realized that he needed to report his findings with an established scientific authority. The next day he sent a telegram to the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. His telegram was discarded by the director, world famous astronomer Asaph Hall III.

Upset with getting no response from an esteemed astronomical authority, Harrison wrote a letter to the editor of the New York Tribune. The newspaper published the letter on “A Curious Phenomenon” 17 April 1879. The contents of Harrison’s newspaper letter concerning his observations were also later published in the May 10th, 1879 edition of Scientific American (Vol 40 Issue 19).

Harrison afterwards was swamped with letters from other astronomers and most certainly he caught his share of denigration from his critics about his supposed “sloppy scientific reporting” of the observation.

The critics asserted that he probably just saw Brorsen’s comet. But the rather militant Harrison knew that Brorsen’s comet would only move about a degree a day in the sky. Whereas, his object was moving at a rate of two minutes of Right Ascension per minute, a huge amount, a comet just wouldn’t be doing that.

Henry Harrison would ultimately get some peer validation from two New York regional astronomers; Mr. J. Spencer Devoe in Manhattanville and Mr. Henry M. Parkhurst. Devoe published a letter confirming his observation of the object the same night Harrison did and published his measurements at the urging of Parkhurst.

Harrison described his object as circular and bell-shaped and clearly moving under intelligent control. Later, Morris K. Jessup, using a combination of measurements from the three regional astronomers, calculated that the object was over New York City for three hours.

He further determined that the object was at an altitude of 80 to 100 miles above the Earth and estimated the bell-shaped object to be about a half mile in diameter.
