An unidentified object floats over Somerville and Bridgewater causing a flurry of phone calls to Somerville police this morning.
SOMERVILLE -- Somerville police were flooded with phone calls this morning after residents reported seeing a large tube-like object fluttering through the sky.
Police said they were swamped with phone calls after a flurry of callers reported to radio station NJ 101.5 that a UFO was flying above the area. Residents then began calling the Somerville Police Department to report the object.
“I first noticed when all our mechanics started looking up at the sky,” said Terry Weil, a sales associate at Honda Autosport in Bridgewater. “It looked like a big black strip fluttering in the air. Maybe a cylinder.”
Somerville Police Lt. Donna Young said authorities were not sure what the object was, but said it caused no problems other than tying up police phone lines shortly before noon.
“We have no idea what it was but it did not cause any problems here in Somerville,” she said. “We are under the impression that it might be a weather balloon or something like that, but regardless, it did not cause any problems whatsoever.”
The Air Traffic Control Tower in Morristown did not have any pilot reports of the object, nor did officials at Solberg Airport in Hunterdon, Somerset Airport in Bedminster and Blairstown Airport in Warren County.
Unmanned craft Voyager 2 has sent distorted messages from space 14th May 2010 By Tom HutchinsonYour Shout ( 0 )
ALIENS have hijacked a NASA probe and are using it to try to contact Earth, experts believe.
Unmanned craft Voyager 2 has sent “distorted” messages home from deepest space.
The probe was launched 33 years ago in a bid to contact extraterrestrial life – and UFO boffins now believe it may have found some.German expert Hartwig Hausdorf claims the strange signals could be alien transmissions.
The craft was launched alongside sister probe Voyager 1 in 1977. Its cargo included what NASA described as a “gold-plated, copper gramophone record” full of songs and greetings in 55 languages.
But on April 22 this year the craft briefly stopped transmitting, then began sending gobbledygook.
NASA engineers reckon the glitch is a data transmission fault which they can repair. But Mr Hausdor, author of a book called UFOs – The Are Still Flying, said: “It seems someone has reprogrammed or hijacked the probe.”
Voyager 2 is now at the edge of our solar system, having travelled further than any other spaceship.
A NASA insider said: “This is probably just a faulty machine spouting gibberish.
“But the idea it could have been found by intelligent life has excited people. If true, it could change the world in an instant.”
The truth about UFO activity would be released to the public if David Cameron became prime minister.
David Cameron has vowed to publish any secret files that may exist on UFOs if he becomes prime minister.
Speaking at one of his regular Cameron Direct public meetings, he pledged to be "open and frank" with any government knowledge about close encounters.
The Conservative leader was responding to a question about apparent government cover-ups of UFO activity.
Mr Cameron joked: "I'm convinced we've been visited by aliens - one of them is trade secretary Peter Mandelson."
At the meeting in Tynemouth, North Tyneside, he was questioned about a spate of mysterious incidents.
A member of the audience asked: "In July last year the respected scientist and astronaut Dr Edgar Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the moon, spoke on a British radio station.
"He said the American government had had contact with extra terrestrials on multiple occasions and that these were ongoing. If I became prime minister I would always be entirely open and frank about these things
"He spoke about the Roswell event in 1947 where wreckage of a downed UFO was recovered and found to contain alien bodies.
"He said this event was real but was covered up by the government for many years.
"Do you agree with me that the British people have a right to know if we have been visited, and if so, when you become prime minister will you seek to lift the veil of secrecy and give the public the truth that they deserve?
Mr Cameron replied: "I have no idea there is intelligent life out there and no idea whether any of the sightings which have taken place or whether any incidents which have taken place have any basis in truth.
"When people have looked at the Roswell incident, or when people have looked at pictures... a rational explanation tends to be produced to try and show what has happened is not what those who believe in UFOs suggest.
"But I think we should be a open as possible, so I would be quite happy to give you a guarantee that if I became prime minister I would always be entirely open and frank about these things.
"I don't think any of us have any clue whether there's intelligent life out there and it is certainly not something that any government should seek to hide from anyone."
A resident of Puerto Montt was an eyewitness 32 years ago.
The year was 1965 and in the early hours of July 29th, a group of people attended the wake for a young woman from Puerto Montt, in the Pelluco region. One of the attendees was Arnaldo Flores, who at the time worked as an officer for the Health Service and also managed a youth home, also located in Pelluco.
“The time was approximately 4:00 in the morning when we heard a deafening noise that grew in intensity. It was really loud. We thought it was an earthquake, and it was very strange as we were in the middle of a wake, sharing a family’s grief, yet most of us ran away from the place as fast as we could,” says Flores.
“Upon leaving the house we realized that it wasn’t an earthquake. Rather, there was a very large object in the sky. We had it before us for some three seconds, but it’s an image that one doesn’t forget easily.
"Besides, it was very near – some 80 meters over our position. It was circular, completely circular, with many flashing violet and yellowish lights. It passed very slowly before our eyes and traveled approximately one kilometer toward Puerto Montt. We had the impression that it landed.”
But this wasn’t all. The day after the event, at a property belonging to the youth home managed by Don Arnaldo, “which was nothing but shrubbery and brambles, was completely burned 50 meters around.
In fact, scientists came to visit the area after the event. They conducted an investigation that lasted months, but we never learned of their conclusions. They conducted several tests, some of them involving radiation, but nothing more.”
Arnaldo Flores is one of many people in our country and around the world who have seen an unidentified flying object. How many more people will see something similar over the years?
This question has no answer, and this applies to all the UFO sightings that occurred in the past, and will presumably occur, in the future. There is no explanation. All we can do is wait.

I am optimistic that someday we may find evidence that life formed on other planets, perhaps Mars, or maybe earth-like planets that orbit around other stars. As a result, people often ask me about UFOs and reports of alien visitations to Roswell and other locations.
There’s nothing wrong with being curious, but I’m always struck by how people ask the question. They say: “Do you believe in UFOs?”
Science is not about what we believe. Science is about what we can see, measure, test and verify. Science is about the evidence, but no one ever asks me, “What’s the evidence that UFOs are real?” No one ever asks, “How solid is the evidence that UFOs are really alien spacecraft?”
Science demands we consider everything skeptically, and only take something seriously if the evidence is solid and overwhelming.
I think it was the astronomer Carl Sagan who first noticed the way this question is usually asked, and pointed out that this phrasing tells us something important about how people think about UFOs. Do we think about UFOs as a scientific question, which can be answered by carefully evaluating the evidence, or do we treat UFOs as an issue of faith?
Scientific thinking has done so much good for the world that it’s hard to even grasp it all. Our technology, our medicine, even something as basic as a glass of clean water to drink would be impossible in today’s world without the scientific process.
Scientific thinking requires that all ideas must be treated with rigorous skepticism, and that we are only allowed to consider evidence that can be double-checked. Scientific thinking demands a certain amount of discipline, yet the rewards for the human race have been immense.
Why are people so eager to believe in UFOs, to believe that advanced alien civilizations are visiting the earth today? The evidence that UFOs are alien spacecraft is thin at best, and can’t stand up to any reasonable skepticism, yet Amazon lists thousands of fast-selling books about UFOs.
In the 1990s TV series “The X-Files,” we see a poster of a UFO with the caption: “I want to believe.” Believing is fun. It’s exciting to believe in UFOs, and alien visitations. But in the end, what we believe doesn’t really matter.
Whether we believe something or not, the truth is out there. You can believe the earth is flat. You can believe the moon is made of green cheese. That doesn’t change the reality of what actually exists.
I don’t want to believe. I want to KNOW. I want to have real, solid evidence, so that I know I’m not fooling myself.
The whole point of science is that we can learn about the world around us by observing it, by gathering evidence that we can double-check and verify. It’s not about what we believe. It’s about what we can see and measure. It’s about what stands up to hard-nosed skepticism.
This means that eyewitness reports of visits to alien spacecraft don’t make the cut, and should not be taken seriously, because they cannot be verified. I have never seen any evidence that would persuade me that UFOs are anything other than a fascinating phenomenon in human psychology.
Belief’s got nothing to do with it.

The airplane was a Boeing 747, a wide-bodied, long-range airliner with Swiss national registration. The flight left Philadelphia International Airport at 4:50 p.m. and landed at Boston Logan International Airport 57 minutes later.
The cockpit crew consisted of Capt. Phil Bobet, with 15,000 hours of flying time, First Officer (co-pilot) G, with 7,500 hours of flying time, and Flight Engineer K, whose total flying experience was not listed in the various reports.
Capt. Bobet was sitting in the left pilot's seat, and First Officer G was in the right seat. The Flight Engineer's seat swivels so that he can face forward to share the pilot's view, or sideways toward his instrument panel and aircraft system controls. Ordinarily, the Flight Engineer is facing forward during takeoff and landing, but turns sideways at other times during the flight.
(Editions Note: Although this report is rather long, and the event is not particularly unusual, it is being run as an example of a thorough investigation - as well as an interesting account of the unusual interest shown by government officials (the ghost of TWA Flight 800?).
The flight proceeded along airways in accordance with its planned route. Sixteen minutes after takeoff it was over New York's Kennedy Airport, and turning to a northeasterly heading toward Boston.
The Captain, who had been at the controls, transferred control of the airplane to the First Officer and keyed the microphone on the public address System to make a routine passenger announcement. The weather was clear, and the passengers sitting on the left-hand side of the airplane could see New York City and its environs.
Capt. Bobet advised them of the sights beneath the airplane. As he was talking about New York City, he was looking at it through the left side cockpit window. With that portion of his announcement finished, he turned his head forward.
While Capt. Bobet was making his public address announcement, First Officer G was leaning forward, concentrating on adjusting the volume on his radio receiver panel.
At the same time the Captain' s gaze turned to view the expanse ahead of the airliner, the co-pilot, now satisfied with his audio panel setting, moved to scan forward and outside. The time was 5:07 p.m. Thus it was that the two pilots almost simultaneously saw the UFO.
Report to Traffic Control
The following dialogue is from the tape recording made by the FAA. Ail air traffic control communications are taped and archived. This permits later investigation of communications where violations of regulations are alleged, or where there is an accident or other unusual event.
SW = Swissair Flight 127, probably Capt. Bobet
ATC = Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center, Danbury Sector 22, radar controller.
SW: Swissair 127
ATC: Swissair 127, go ahead.
SW: Yes sir. l don't know what it was, but it just over flew just like a couple of hundred feet above us. I don't know if it was a rocket or whatever. But incredibly fast. Opposite direction.
ATC: In the opposite direction?
SW: Yes sir, and the time was two-one-zero -seven [5:07 p.m. local time]. It was too fast to be an airplane.
ATC: OK, thank you.
