Film on UFO Sighting Unfolds on Maury Island

By ELIZABETH SHEPHERD, Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber Arts Editor

One of the weirdest chapters in island history will soon light up the big screen.

On June 29, a film crew and ensemble of actors sailed the waters just off Maury and then came ashore on the beach — all part of a long day’s shoot for “The Maury Island Incident,” a short film about a UFO sighting that took place there in 1947.

The film’s director, Burien resident Scott Schaefer, said he has high hopes for the film — a $50,000 effort that will feature digitalized UFOs, period settings and costumes, a cast of 12 actors and a crew of almost 40 film professionals.

“We have a lot of ambition,” said Schaefer, adding that he and his team hope to take the finished 20- to 40-minute film on the festival circuit, and also use it to pitch the idea of a feature film or television series based on the spooky event.

The Maury Island Incident — so dubbed in books and newspaper coverage about the event — began on the afternoon of June 21, 1947, when a Tacoma seaman named Harold Dahl was trolling the waters of Puget Sound, looking for loose logs to collect and sell.

Then something strange happened, just off the east coast of Maury Island.

“As I looked up from the wheel of my boat I noticed six very large donut-shaped aircraft,” Dahl later told an investigator. “I would judge they were about 2,000 feet above the water and almost directly overhead.”

Dahl said the UFOs were silent and had “no visible means of propulsion.” He also claimed that one of them wobbled, dipped and began to rain lava-like slag down on the beach and his boat, damaging it and burning his young son on his arm. His family dog, he reported, was killed by the cascading space rocks. The terror finally ended, he said, when the five other aircraft came to the distressed ship’s rescue and they all whizzed away, out of sight.

Dahl’s story marked the beginning of an overheated Cold War era when hundreds of Americans reported seeing saucer-shaped objects traversing the skies. And, although the Maury Island incident has never been as well known as the purported UFO crash that took place 16 days later in Roswell, New Mexico, it does have an important place in history — many experts consider it to be the first reported close encounter with alien spacecraft in modern UFOolgy.

It also included what is considered by many experts to be the first sighting of a “man in black.” To add to the drama, the story also includes a mysterious plane crash that killed two U.S. intelligence officers sent to investigate the incident two months after it happened.

According to Schaefer, it’s all fodder for a great film, and he said he’s assembled a capable team of local actors and other film professionals to bring the story to life.

Screenwriter and producer Steve Edmiston, a Des Moines resident and attorney who has penned and produced several other films, wrote the script based on FBI investigative documents that were declassified in 1997, 50 years after the incident. He also visited the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum to research the story.

“I found there was a nifty thick binder about UFOs that is kept in the back of the historical society,” Edmiston said.

Schaefer also has impressive credentials, having won three National Emmy Awards for writing on “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” His more than 25 years experience in television also includes directing shows such as “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “America’s Funniest People” and Fox On-Air Promotions and KING-TV’s “Almost Live,” where he got his start in 1985.

He became interested in UFOology, he said, in the early 1990s, when he worked in Hollywood as a field director of a television show called “Sightings,” which delved into the mysteries of flying saucer sightings.

“Let’s just say I went into that show as a skeptic, and came out a non-skeptic,” he said.

Schaefer is also well-positioned to generate buzz for his film. He is the founder, publisher and editor of South King Media, a conglomerate of six news blogs and an internet radio station that serve southwest King County communities.

The film has already garnered coverage on KOMO News, and the production also picked up one of five highly coveted Washington Filmworks Innovation Lab awards. The prizes consist of funding assistance and other support for films helmed by Washington resident directors.

With shooting of the film now completed, Schaefer hopes to premiere the film by the end of the year, and said he was open to the idea of a subsequent screening of the movie at Vashon Theatre.

In the meantime, though, islanders can get their fix on the story by attending the upcoming Strawberry Festival parade. The Vashon-Maury Historical Association’s float, now under construction, will feature a re-enactment of the historic sighting.

“There’s a lot of controversy around the incident, whether it was real or whether it was concocted,” said islander Bruce Haulman, who is active in the association. “There’s tons of stuff on the internet about it. There are all these sort of conspiracy theories, and it’s a great story,” he said.

But it is true? Even the film’s screenwriter, Steve Edmiston, said he isn’t sure.

“My honest opinion is that I don’t know what [Harold Dahl] saw,” he said. “But if he made it all up, it’s one of the cleverist stories I’ve ever heard.”

Mexico: “The Lights Ascended Until They Vanished in the Sky”
UFO Depiction

Yucatán – Two incidents in Cobá, Quintana Roo, during the 1980s.

MERIDA – Reader Raul Robles tells us of two experiences he shared a few years ago, which I found striking, as they were similar to other sighting reports in the municipality of Chemax, Yucatan, and on the road leading to Cobá, Quintana Roo, which could result in the witnesses having seen the same thing.

“Well, I would like to share my experience with you. I visited Cobá, Quintana Roo in 1980 and in 1983 I had two USO (unidentified submarine object) sightings, one within a 100 meters distance and another at five hundred meters.

At the time, this little town only had a few palapas (shacks) and I came to work at a hotel facing a lagoon, 500 meters from the Cobá ruins -- covering ninety four square kilometers and four lagoons – and which are very famous today.

“The first sighting occurred in the lagoon facing the hotel at around midnight. It was witnessed by a local resident, who was the hotel watchman, and yours truly, since we were checking the surrounding area.”

“What happened was that a very bright light emerged from the lagoon, very quickly, and the waters rose into the air, as though it were raining. We just stood there looking, startled and not saying a word. Once we recovered from our fright, we said “no one’s going to believe us” and that’s how it was. But it was unforgettable for us. I told my girlfriend at the time – who is now my wife – about the event and she said I was a fool and insane, to keep my feet on the ground because such things did not exist.”

“In a matter of seconds, the water fell down like rain.”

“She didn’t believe in any of this, and well, it upset me greatly that she should doubt me, and time went by. So at the end of 1983 we went out of the hotel I worked at around one in the morning (we had a child by then, too) and there were no lights in the town. Only the hotel had a generator. Imagine our surprise, as we left, to find a light covering a good portion of the pyramids.

“The light looked like when you’re going into a city, and you can only see the glow, but very powerful. I thought I saw it between the two pyramids where we find the one called “El Observatorio” (the observatory). We were stunned, and I asked her, are you seeing what I’m seeing? Weakly, she replied yes. And we stayed like that for around ten minutes until we saw how the light withdrew, becoming smaller, and then it shot off into the sky at a high speed, vanishing into infinity, until we could no longer see it.

“I asked my wife again if she had seen it, and she replied yes with a certain amount of fear in her speech. Then I said: “Now you believe me?” “Yes”, she answered.

It should be noted that a few similar cases were reported in the municipality of Chemax, bordering Cobá, around the same time. I had the chance to interview some people a few weeks ago who said there hadn’t been any recent UFO reports, but that in the early ‘80s it was common to see “spaceships” flying over the wilderness, including at low altitude, heading toward Cobá.

Some of them would vanish quickly into the air, speeding off vertically. (Translation (c) 2013 S. Corrales, IHU. Special thanks to J. Moreno, SIPSE, and Guillermo Gimenez, Planeta UFO) POSTED BY INEXPLICATA (IHU)

Two Witnesses Report Cylinder UFO Close to Ground in Maryland
UFO Depiction
Published: 2:23 PM 7/2/2013

Maryland - 07-01-13

We were traveling out of the Shell gas station near Hillandale Shopping Center when my passenger observed an object flying somewhat above the buildings with erratic lights.

I could not see anything as I was driving. She exclaimed,"I need to pull over to see the object."

I pulled over into a parking lot of a church. The parking lot was empty and quite a nice size lot. I then put down the top as we were in a convertible.

I then observed the lights blinking about the object and thought it could be a plane, but as the object got closer it started to pass over the lot almost above our heads.

I thought it could be an UFO since it was so close to the ground and made no sound.

We began to grow quiet when I started to flash my lights at the object. My girlfriend was telling me not to, and tried to restart the car, but couldn’t.

I wanted to signal the UFO and then something strange happened as it started to occur to me just how close the object actually was.

It turned off its light and then began flying without running lights. Now I’m not sure about airplanes, but I do know that its illegal for boats to run without running lights.

The next thing that happened was we watched it as its dark cylindrical shape floated away.

Over Twenty Witnesses See Silver Sphere UFO in Alberta, Canada
UFO Depiction
Published: 2:59 PM 7/11/2013

Calgary, Alberta, Canada - 06-28-13

Shape: Sphere - Duration: 5 minutes

There was a very high silver sphere moving very slowly beside the sun during the day (around 20 people watching with me).

It was the final day before summer break for my colleagues and me (teachers). We had a BBQ get-together at work on June 28, 2013 at 1 PM.

We were sitting outside in the school courtyard as it was a nice and sunny day. I was having a conversation with one of my colleagues, when I looked up towards the sun.

The sun was actually being blocked by the side brick wall of our building. Right beside the sun, there was a silver sphere. It was quite small as it was very high up in the sky.

My colleague asked me what the heck I was looking at, and I pointed it to him. He saw it too. I couldn't detect any motion at the time. I got up and showed another colleague who was in the middle of a conversation with a few others. She saw it.

Next thing I knew everyone was looking up into the sky, with one hand up blocking the sun, and were all seeing this silver dot in the sky. I ran into the building to get my phone and turn on the Skywalk app to see if it was Venus or possibly the ISS.

I came back after about 20 seconds and the object was now to the left of the sun (it was to the right when I first saw it). It still was not moving fast whatsoever. In fact, I thought it wasn't moving at all, and that's why I went to grab my phone... as I thought maybe I was looking at Venus (which would have blown me away seeing it in the day).

I checked Skywalk and it showed what was up there, but since the object moved, it certainly wasn't going to be Venus.

At this point my colleagues were concluding it was the ISS. I explained that the ISS likely wouldn't be visible right next to the sun, and moves much faster than this object and would be long gone by now.

I would say the entire ordeal was about 4 or 5 minutes long. Soon people lost interest and the BBQ party continued and the sphere was no longer visible.

There is the chance that this was a weather balloon, but I have no way of knowing. I just am not one to jump to major conclusions, but it was neat to see people's reactions and I was happy that I had between 20-30 people with me looking at the object at the time.

This obviously eliminates anyone thinking I just have an over-active imagination.

Flying Saucer Seen in County Kerry - Old Newspaper Clipping
UFO Newspaper Clipping
Published: 1:46 PM 7/12/2013

An interesting piece of Irish curio was unearthed by the Irish blog Broadsheet this week in the shape of an Irish Times clipping from July 12, 1947. The clipping’s headline reads:

“Flying Saucer Seen in County Kerry”

Now an international hobby, UFOs and flying saucers are spotted on a daily basis around the globe and the existence of aliens is debated across the Internet, but what is curious about this report is that it was published three days after the Roswell UFO Incident.

The sighting at Cahirciveen, County Kerry, was seen by five witnesses who saw a spinning disc traveling at great speed through the air.

The Roswell Incident took place in Roswell, New Mexico on July 7, 1947 when an airborne object crashed near a ranch.

The crash was attributed to a United States military surveillance balloon, but the most famous explanation is that a spacecraft carrying extraterrestrial life crashed.

Maybe the rest of the flock of space ships traveled on for a quick spin in Ireland?
