This is the only documented case of a combat aircraft opening fire against a UFO. On the morning of 11 April 1980, personnel from the Fuerza Aerea Peruana (FAP) base in La Joya, Arequipa, a thousand kilometers south of the Peruvian capital, detected a strange object flying in the vicinity.
At the time, the La Joya air base was considered one of the most strategic and secret in Perú due to its proximity to the Chilean border, a country against which a war was nearly unleashed years earlier. The base had underground facilities in the desert pampas, where valuable combat aircraft were concealed.
Assuming that the intruder was a spy aircraft, the base commander ordered an immediate scramble of a Sukhoi SU-22 fighter-bomber with orders to destroy the target, originally supposed to be a sort of aerostat balloon located 5 kilometers away. The time was 7:15 a.m. and base personnel – a complement of some 1800 men – were in formation, witnesses to this event.
Oscar Santa María Huertas, at the time a lieutenant in the FAP, commanded the aircraft that raced down the runway before lifting itself skyward on an intercept-and-destroy mission.
The moment the object was within his sights, suspended and motionless some 600 meters over the ground, Lt. Santa María pulled the trigger, firing a powerful hail of bullets from his aircraft’s 30mm guns. Sixty-four rounds out of a total of 160 were fired against the UFO.
The rounds appeared to pierce the object without exploding or causing any harm. The object then hurled itself skyward at a tremendous speed, chased by the Soviet-made interceptor. The UFO then gained speed. Santa María lit the afterburners, propelling the Sukhoi to Mach 1.2, breaking the sound barrier.
Up to that moment, the object had not been detected by radar. For this reason, the Peruvian pilot did not avail himself of the plane’s missiles. He only sought to get close enough to the object to fire again, having over 100 rounds left.
When the Peruvian Sukhoi was already near the UFO, the object made a sudden stop, violating the laws of inertia. The fighter-bomber flew past it, with both vehicles at an altitude of 11,000 meters (36,000 feet) “the object pulled away quickly, gaining altitude at the same time. Later, it stopped abruptly, and I had to maneuver to avoid colliding with it,” said Santa María.
It was thus that Lt. Santa María and his aircraft went from being hunters to prey. He was being pursued by the UFO at 19,000 meters (62,000 feet), nearly 1000 meters beyond the aircraft manufacturer’s specifications. Furthermore, his fuel supply was running low.
Faced with this situation, Oscar Santa María decided to abandon his mission and withdraw, even as the UFO continued to ascend, losing itself in space. He was eighty-four kilometers away from his base, and 22 minutes had elapsed since his first contact with the UFO.
After landing, the UFO reappeared, remaining visible to the air base for nearly two hours.
Peruvian authorities jealously guarded this incident and it recently came to light during a declassification of documents by the U.S. Department of State. Researchers interviewed Oscar Santa María, the now-retired fighter commander, and their report appeared in History Channel, becoming known worldwide through cable TV broadcasts. It should be noted that Santa María had been speaking of the matter for a number of years in several American and European countries.
According to UFO experts, this is the only case in which a military aircraft has attached a UFO. There was a similar case, but the pilot was unable to fire against the unknown object. On the other hand, the Peruvian did make use of his weapons, firing a total of 64 rounds.
The aggressiveness, determination and dexterity of the Peruvian pilot should be noted, as he attacked his target without hesitation, flew his aircraft to its design limits, and returned intact to its base.
A total of 52 Sukhoi-22 fighter bombers (SU-17s in the USSR) entered into service in Peru three years before the incident, and had been combat-ready for two years prior to the encounter.
They participated in the two most recent conflicts with Ecuador, and after several refurbishments and upgrades in which they were equipped with electronic, optical and countermeasures, some 20 units remain in service, although some accounts suggest that they have been completely removed from service.
Lt. Santa María described the object he attacked: “It was an object with a blued dome, looking like a light bulb split in half, with a wide metal base that made everything shine. When I approached and saw it completely, I realized that it lacked nozzles, wings, windows, antennae...nothing at all. It was a very smooth surface above and below.”
There is another undocumented case in which a Peruvian aircraft, fearing an attack, had fired a missile against a UFO three years prior to this incident.

In the 1950s this might have been called a UFO “Wave”, but today it just appears that interest in extraterrestrials – some of whom might even be coming here – is the rage from China to London and of course to Hollywood.
Does our growing global fascination with extraterrestrials suggest the new international Space Age is just around the corner?
A Chinese Astronomer Says Yes
Wang Sichao, a veteran astronomer of the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said flat out in August that “extraterrestrial beings do exist and their UFOs have the ability to visit our earth,” (Peoples’ Daily Online, 8/23/10). His statements are as unequivocal as former Apollo Moon-walking astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who has claimed for years that “…we have been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomenon is real… It has been covered up by governments for quite some time now,” (7/28/2008, ABC News).
However, Wang believes that Stephen Hawking’s recent warnings that their arrival would be a bad day for humanity are premature.
“If they are friendly to us, we can promote the human beings’ civilization through exchange and cooperation with them. If they are not, as long as we prepared for their invasion, we can beat them back based on their weaknesses. After all, they are life entities, they would show their slips,”
Obviously the professor is an optimist. Anyone with the technology to travel across interstellar distances could also make us wish they hadn’t. The classic Twilight Zone episode “To Serve Man” comes to mind!
Wang’s public statements come in the wake of 8 reported UFO sightings in China since June. For example, last month an airport in Inner Mongolia was shut down for over an hour because a UFO — reportedly seen both visually and on radar — was buzzing the field.
Unknowns Lurk Everywhere
UFO sightings are not limited to China — they appear almost everywhere. A quick scan of the Mutual UFO Network website, a 40+-year-old, science-based organization, indicates that current aerial unknowns range from a silent boomerang in Boise to agile cigars in Australia.
Over the last 100+ years, a global surge in UFO/ET interest has presaged and figured prominently in each transformative Maslow Window.
For example, the ultra-ebullient Peary/Panama/T. Rosevelt Maslow Window (~1901-13) followed the founding of Lowell Observatory in Arizona to probe the “canals” on Mars. Lowell saw the canals as convincing evidence for a global Macro Engineering Project built by intelligent Martians. His public loved it and in 1907 the Wall Street Journal actually announced “…the proof by astronomical observations…that conscious, intelligent human life exists upon the planet Mars,”
Likewise, early in the 1960s Apollo Maslow Window, astronomer Frank Drake inaugurated the famous Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) using a radio telescope in West Virginia. Later he and Carl Sagan ebulliently asserted that a million advanced civilizations might exist in our galaxy, and in 2010 Drake reiterated his ebullient belief that it’s “only a matter of time” before we detect them.
Before aligning exclusively with radio SETI, Sagan wrote a stunning, but currently obscure scientific paper (in 1962) in which he argued that advanced ETs had already visited Earth using interstellar spacecraft aided by relativistic time dilation.
If this century-plus pattern holds, we should expect global interest in ETs, UFOs, Earth-like planets, and human expansion into the cosmos to accelerate as we approach the new international Space Age around 2015.
Is Life Abundant in the Galaxy?
It’s not just UFOs that are grabbing the global public, it’s anything to do with extraterrestrials. For example, Chandra Wickramasinghe, Director of the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology, flatly asserts that current astrophysical research “overwhelmingly” supports his theory that human life started outside of Earth; i.e., that all humans are, in fact, “aliens from outer space.”
In his recent article in the International Journal of Astrobiology, Wickramasinghe argues that the spectral signatures of interstellar dust clouds are due to “biologically derived aromatic molecules.” Thus major components of interstellar materials are actually “… degradation products of biology,” suggesting life is not rare in our galaxy.
The Royal Society Seeks Extraterrestrials
Not to be left out — following scientific meetings in 2009 at the Vatican on Extraterrestrials — the prestigious UK Royal Society has had not just one, but 2 scientific meetings in 2010 (in January and just last week) to consider if exterrestrials are here on Earth and how to properly greet them.
At the Royal Society, Professor Paul Davies of Arizona State University suggested that, contrary to the approach of radio SETI, “We need to give up the notion that ET is sending us some sort of customised message and take a new approach.”
This flurry of ET-related scientific meetings, astrophysical research, and UFO sightings occurs in the context of the exciting recent discovery of the first extrasolar planet with the potential to be genuinely Earth-like. It orbits the red dwarf star Gliese 581 and is nearby — only 20 light years away. If advanced Gliesan’s ever existed, they should be here by now.
What if ET Really Phones Home?
And finally, to complete the pop culture scene, the new movie Skyline opens November 12. It features UFOs and extraterrestrials on Earth and a Rapture-like scene that’s unforgettable. As in the 1960s Space Age, cinema is likely to play a major role in the 2015 Maslow Window.

The Dropa Stones were first discovered in 1938, when a archaeological expedition led by Chi Pu Tei, stumbled across a cave high in the mountains that border China and Tibet.
It was obvious to the archaeologists that the cave had been occupied by primitive people from long ago. On the walls of the caves were carved pictograms of the heavens and earth: the sun, the moon, the stars, and the earth, each connected with lines.
Then came the most incredible discovery, half-buried beneath the floor of the cave was an odd stone disk, which was approximately nine inches in diameter and three quarters of an inch thick. In the center was a perfect 3/4″ hole, with a fine grrove spiralling out from the center, resembling that of an old phonograph record.
A total of 716 plates were found, and each held a secret. The groove on further inspection was a continuous line of strange carved hieroglyphic writing.
Dr. Tsum Um Nui, in 1962, had the enormously difficult task of transcribing the character from the disks to paper.
He estimated that they were at least 12,000 years old, with writing so small he had to use a magnifying glass to see it clearly, much of the writing had worn away, but he was so puzzled at how these primitive people could have fashioned these stones, and how they managed the almost microscopic writing.
Eventually he made progress and a word emerged, then another, and another until an entire sentence, he had broken the code!
Dr. Tsum Um Nui, discovered that the stones were written by a people who called themselves, the “Dropa,”, but what he was reading 12,000 years later did not make sense to him.
However, when he had finished his translation, he wrote up a paper on his findings and presented it to the University for publication, however the reaction that he encountered was not what he expected.
The Academy of Prehistory expressly forbade him to publish or even speak about his findings. The world, the Academy decided, would not know about the “Dropa” and their fateful journey to Earth!
The 716 disc plates tells the story of the Dropa being a space probe from a distant planet that crash-landed in the Baian-Kara-Ula Mountains of the Himalayas.
The occupants of the spacecraft, the Dropa, found refuge in a caves of the mountains, and further tell how they were unable to repair their disabled spacecraft, leaving them unable to return to their home planet, becoming stranded on earth.
Why did the Academy of Prehistory forbid Dr. Tsum Um Nui, from publishing his paper on the transcriptions from the 716, ancient plates?

Scott Albrecht is an alumnus of Central Michigan University who grew up watching the "X-Files," and attended a presentation by a renowned UFO expert on Wednesday with more than 300 at the Bovee University Center auditorium.
Albrecht, 31, wanted to be a part of the introduction of "anecdotal evidence" by Robert Hastings from documents that were obtained by the use of the Freedom of Information Act.
"I wanted to see the introduction of this stuff go public," said Albrecht.
Hastings, a renowned UFO expert talked about his "40 years of gathering and analyzing the data."
"So, called flying saucers do indeed exist," said Hastings. "The public has a right and definitely the need to know the facts.
"This is offered on a take-it or leave-it basis."
In September, Hastings held a press conference at the National Press Club which included former Air Force officers.
"I have obtained hundreds of declassified documents," said Hastings.
One moment during the presentation that stuck with Albrecht was when Hastings said that "aliens are peaceful" and the room rumbled with laughter.
"There was a big wave of cognitive dissonance," said Albrecht who has been researching UFOs "off and on for 12 years."
Trish Larkin of Montrose and Christopher Lakosky of Clinton Township arrived early and had third row seats, and they left the presentation rather disappointed.
"I thought the guy was crazy," said Larkin. "It didn't grasp my attention.
"I did what he said during his opening statement - to have an open mind."
Lakosky said that he was hoping for some new information, as what was presented he had heard before.
"I need the proof," said Lakosky. "I need to be probed.
"I was hoping that it would be interesting. No, it was not worth (attending)."
The CMU Program Board's cultural events director, Emily Panone said she wanted to bring something that was cultural and "not just about (skin) color."
"This is popular culture," said Panone. "We've never had anyone like this before.
"I thought attendance was great. I'm happy with the turn out, and I think it went very well."
"At this time, there is a wealth of evidence in the public domain," said Hastings. "Is a six-decade-long deception justifiable?
"The time has come for Americans and everyone on the planet Earth to know about the secret."

A MYSTERIOUS egg-shaped UFO has been spotted in broad daylight above Brentwood. Scaffolders were driving along Ongar Road near the bridge over the A12 when they were left stunned by the silver craft, which "zoomed" through the sky at around 1.30 pm on Monday, October 11.
Matt Williams, 29, of Running Waters, Brentwood, was driving to a job in Ongar when his friend suddenly spotted the strange unidentified flying object in the clear blue sky.
Matt initially dismissed it as some kind of hot air balloon, but it was moving at such high speeds through the sky that he was not totally convinced. No noise could be heard coming from the object at ground level and it lacked the vapour trail normally associated with an aircraft.
"It was egg-shaped and silver. It was quite low in the sky – we didn't know what it was," Matt told the Gazette.
"It was moving really quickly and then it slowed down so we could get a good look at it, before it zoomed away into the distance. As it disappeared it appeared black at the back.
"We are not saying it is an alien. But there was something in the sky, we don't know what it was and we are scaffolders and in the sky quite a lot."
He added: "The speed was unbelievable. It was no plane. I was glad other planes were around because it showed how fast it was going. I have never seen anything like it."
Just days prior to the UFO spotting, a cyclist reported being surrounded by inexplicable lights in the middle of Thorndon Country Park late at night.
Investigator Mark Doulton of the Southend UFO Group & Essex UFO Investigations, said it was certainly interesting these two local sightings had happened so close together.
Speaking about the egg-shaped UFO he added: "From the first description it does sound like a hot air balloon but saying it went off at speed rules that out.
"It is an unusual shape but it is not unheard of."
Mr Doulton said cigar-shaped UFOs were far more common but he is interested in hearing from anyone who has seen anything strange in the sky.
The Ministry of Defence previously had a department dedicated to UFO sightings, but it was officially closed down at the end of last year.
Did you see the egg-shaped craft? If so, please call the Gazette newsdesk on 01245 603388 with details of your sighting.

Alaska - Two UFO/Plane Encounters
On January 30, 1987, a US Air Force KC-135 was flying from Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska, to Eielson AFB near Fairbanks.
The crew of the KC-135 reported a large, silent, disc-shaped UFO at about 20,000 feet altitude. At this time, Anchorage radar control showed nothing unusual.
In a moment, radar control asked the pilot of the plane if they still had the unknown object in sight. The frightened pilot replied yes, and added that the UFO was only 40 feet from the plane.
The cockpit recording referenced the JAL - 1628 incident, which had occurred only a month earlier.
About 1/2 hour later, Anchorage Control Tower relayed a message from the FAA, informing the pilot to contact them upon landing. The FAA wanted a full report on the UFO seen by the crew.
The very next day, on January 31, another similar sighting would occur over Alaskan skies. Alaska Airline's Flight 53 reported enormous, disc-like objects.
These UFOs, according to the pilot's report, were "tracking" Flight 53. The Control Tower operator related to the pilot that they did not show anything unusual on their radar.
The pilot of Flight 53 was very concerned, stating that the UFO was moving at a mile/per/second, which would be about 3,600 m/p/h.
The pilot also stated that the UFO had almost immediately disappeared after flying under Flight 53.
Neither of the two encounters were adequately explained by any conventional flying objects, or atmospheric anomalies, and remain a mystery.
