The Mars Face: Reason For Discrepancy Between Images?
I have been wondering why the "Horned Face" preferred by the news media was so different from the 3-D reconstruction sans "horn," since both were produced by the same organization. So I looked at the image credits for both.

What evidently is the more accurate enhancement without the "horn" is at: http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEM9WG8LURE_index_1.html#subhead1

The "Horned Face" is at: http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Mars_Express/SEM09F8LURE_1.html

The credit printed on the more accurate reconstruction is:

ESA/DLR/FU Berlin (G. Neukum)

But for the Horned Face, the credit printed on the image is:

ESA/DLR/FU Berlin (G. Neukum). MOC (Malin Space Science Systems).

It looks like Dr. Malin or his colleagues might have "helped" ESA create a 3-D reconstruction that looks the way he wants it to look while the ESA people, without his expert assistance, merely created a reconstruction that shows the landform the way it really looks.
