Updated Investigators report March 2009. After nearly 30 years and the events being rehashed with Mr Johnson a number of times I now find myself at a dead end as to the cause of the sighting on the 27th of August 1979. I originally thought that the sighting could have been ball lightening but as my studies have progressed and my knowledge of the events, causes, evidence and explanations have grown I am no longer certain of the original conclusions. Events leading up to incident, known for certain: Val Johnson checked in for a time check at 19:00 hrs on Aug 26th He then set his wrist watch and vehicle clock to this time. This is routine procedure. Val Johnson saw an object at 1:40 am on the morning of 27th August 1979. Mr Johnson was at the junction of County Road #5 and Minnesota State #220 facing West. Mr Johnson turned south onto Hwy 220 from Hwy 5 and proceeded in a southerly direction at a speed of up to 60 – 65 miles per hour. The object observed was a non-blinking, solid white light with definite defined edges. It appeared to be approximately 8 – 12 inches in diameter and 3 – 4 feet off the ground. Mr Johnson's first thought was that it was the landing light of an aircraft in trouble. After about 1.1 miles the light (object) intercepted the police vehicle. Mr Johnson stated that the light was stationary and then the next moment it was at his vehicle. He stated that all he remembered was the light, the sound of breaking glass and the vehicle braking, although he doesn't remember applying the brakes. He does not recall any airplane engine noise. When Mr Johnson came to he saw that his vehicle engine light was on but the engine was not running. At this point Mr Johnson radioed in a 1088 (officer needs assistance) to the dispatcher in Warren the time was 2:19 am. The car ended up across the northbound lane facing East. Damage to the police car, known for certain: See photographs....... Front of vehicle, inside headlight of the set is broken. Dent on the left hand side of hood. Windshield. Front red plastic lens in the left hand roof light has piece broken off and is loose in fitting. Roof antenna bent about 30 degrees. Trunk antenna bent about 90 degrees. Damage to the police car, not mentioned in reports. See photographs and new photographs....... Dent on front bumper just under broken headlight. Two burn and/or damage marks on the rear of the central dome light consistent with impacts from roof and trunk antennas. Clock in the police car was found to be 14 minutes slow. Glass was picked up from Hwy 220 at mile marker #68, proven to come from damaged police car. Injuries and effects sustained by Mr Johnson: Items reported in the police file. Both eyes suffered from welders burns...this is caused by looking at an extremely bright light. A bump on Mr Johnson's forehead. Items not reported in the police file. Mr Johnson said that it felt like his face had been hit with a hard pillow and his mouth and face ached. Subsequently his dental work was found to be fractured. His wrist watch was, also like the vehicle clock, exactly 14 minutes slow. To this day Mr Johnson cannot reclaim the missing 14 minutes but has the distinct feeling that during that time something happened to him and that he is committed to do something but doesn't know what. He is hopeful that one day it will become clear. He has not submitted to regressive hypnotherapy and I believe this is because he is scared of finding out what if anything did happen during this missing time line. Astronomical events happening at or about this time: Perseid meteor shower occurs on August 13. The star Fomalhaut was due South down Hwy 220 at 15 degrees high in the sky at 1.15 magnitude exactly at 1:40 am on the night of the event. Questions without answers: I cannot believe that no other investigators looked at this coincidence, but I can find no report of any other investigation into this. This is simply checked by running a star program IE. Stellarium and setting it up for the target date and time and location. At that angle this white star would have looked very much like an aircraft landing light. Just another point to consider. With a multiple strike on the windshield and hood of the vehicle a meteor strike might have been considered, yet no roadside search was done looking for any burnt or obvious meteoroid rocks. Although a lot has been said about the impact points on the windshield, nothing has ever been said about the fact that it appears that the object that struck the car whatever it was, was definitely solid and it appears to have rolled over the car. Teardrop shape on windshield. If a line is drawn up the windshield it lines up very closely to the bends in the two antennas. Like something hit the windshield and bounced up at an angle of the windshields incline. Ford has determined that the windshield was sucked out not impacted in. Is it possible that tractor beams actually exist and the points are actually grapple marks? Sci Fi maybe. Mr Johnson says that he has no recollection of applying the vehicles brakes. The indentation in the hood of the car is directly over the brake master cylinder. Were the brakes applied by an external force? Very little investigation was done of the burn circular pattern in the field next to the cars resting place. When it was done absorption rates in the vegetation were found to vary from other areas in the surrounding landscape. Why? This vehicle being a 1977 Ford LTD would not have been fitted with airbags, however a seatbelt I would presume was fitted. Did Mr Johnson have his seatbelt on at the time of the event? What did Mr Johnson bang his forehead on? Nothing more is mentioned on this in the report. Mr Johnson said he was accelerating down Hwy 220 at between 60 – 65 MPH. Did he run into a stationary hovering object or did the object rapidly accelerate towards him striking the car? You would think that beings advanced enough to have an interstellar transportation system, if that is what the object was, would be able to avoid a collision. As for the notion (Phillip Klass) that Mr Johnson damaged the vehicle himself with a hammer and a pair of pliers, I find this utterly ignorant and distasteful. Mr Johnson had no reason what so ever to damage his vehicle, He was happy in his job and community and his home life was stable. I can say that I find this case most unusual as it doesn't run in the common CEII classification. I must in reaching my conclusions list this case as an unknown. Guy Westcott... Mar 2009.
